Comes up around 3,200 in a spec I would like ...

But why would I not buy a spectral from Canyon at 1,899  ( current sale price) ... (or even 2,100 ish.  Is the Cotic frame that much better?

As a South Downs and around rider, am I being cheap skate?

Can't comment on the Solaris max, but having just bought a Cotic frame I am so impressed by it. It's lovely.  I don't think you would regret it.

Buy the canyon. Port over the parts. Sell what doesn't fit

“Comes up around 3,200 in a spec I would like …

But why would I not buy a spectral from Canyon”

Because they’re completely different in every way, apart from both being vaguely trail oriented mountain bikes.

“Buy the canyon. Port over the parts. Sell what doesn’t fit.”

So that’ll be EVERYTHING apart from the gears and brakes...

If your spec is coming up at £3.2k you sure the Canyon is the same spec? Sounds like you’re comparing apples with oranges...

whats wrong with a base spec SolarisMAX at £1.8k instead? Mine is still sub £2.5k with McQueen HLRs, SLX and custom hope wheels (& headset).

The canyon will be fine value for money,  but the spec will be nothing like what you have included on the Solaris.

Whoops ... over enthusiastic post there ... I meant Flare Max ...

BTW  ... I was distracted because eI could buy a Canyon, and a New longshot Solaris for the (and transfer bits) for these price as the Flare Max ...

Or I just buy the Flare max frame and transfer all the running gear from my Get 2 Solaris ,,

Drivetrain and finishing kit will port as will brakes. Worst case is wheels and seat post?

But not like or like

I love my FlareMax. Is it £X better than a Canyon?  No idea. I'm sure the Canyon is great,  but I didn't want a Canyon so that would just have been money down the drain. Let's face it, you probably don't really need a new mountain bike (or a mountain bike at all for that matter). It's a luxury purchase. You're buying something because you want it and can (presumably) afford it. So buy whichever one you want. In my experience buying something just because it is cheaper doesn't stop you wanting what you want and often just works out more expensive in the long run.

FlareMAX makes much more sense 🤣

i think roverpig makes a fair point, buy cheap buy twice... especially as it’s an emotive decision, really.

cotic allow you to chop and change to pretty much anything (within reason) and that has a cost.

How does the canyon compare to the base build at £2.6k?

I bought frame forks headset dropper post plus a couple of other bits, transferring stuff off another bike (and having a ‘spare’ set of wheels’...) for my SolarisMAX above, so decide your must haves maybe? Supplement with what you can pick up ‘cheap’ and rob the Solaris for the rest? You can always built that back up on the cheap...

Looks like the Flare Max ....

But the full build seems good value compared to the frame only.  That is now the decision ..

When I priced mine up I got the self build to come out at around the same price as the equivalent full build. That did involve a fair but of shopping around (German sites etc) and some creative accountancy, like ignoring the price of the bars and stem as I had them already 🙂 But it did mean I got exactly what I wanted, down to rims and tyres, although I suspect Cotic could have provided what I wanted anyway. So it probably comes down to whether you actually enjoy building a bike up or not.

After building my SolarisMAX (first time in 6 years) I was ‘I’m never building a bike again...’ but it’s not fallen apart and I had to cut brakes hoses and bleed hydraulic brakes for the first time so all in all it was, er, fun 🤣

Plus if there’s anything not (OCD) quite right it’s my fault...

theres alarge ex demo one for sale for £1.7k on Cotic atm...

I have seen the ex demo ones .... but pre Longshot I think.  And riding at the w/e on a new FlareMax I feel I need an XL...

BTW not strictly a fashion victim, but I seem to be blessed with short legs and long upper body ... I ride a L Solaris Gen 2 ( I had an XL but there was no standover).  The reach of the XL was much better.

I end up with a stem than is unfashionably long, so I don't seem cramped on the bike.
