Damnit the black steel SF looks too good. 'What would HR Giger ride?'

Deffo. Mind you that brings odd thoughts of a Jones chestburster to mind...

Stupid tech question - what hub for the truss fork? Is it 135mm eg. Hope fatsno?

Jones 135 front hub or a paul components whub, with no faffing..any other 135 front or rear hub with micking about with spacers and adaptors.

Stu- yes Marin for the top pic....last time my pink thing hurt your eyes it's 'cos I missed your mouth in the dark.

What Tazzy said about hubs. Brant apparently will have a Truss fork compatable hub from his Phat Bike.

Now, I've been trying to ignore this whole Jones thing in the hope that it would go away and I wouldn't need to try/buy one. However, looking on threads like this and Jonesbikes.com hasn't helped matters - I mean, this....

[img] [/img]

..is all manner of wrong and right at the same time. I want one, badly.....

How do these ride compared to say, a 26inch full suss trail bike? Are they faster/slower or is it just different? I want one but its going to take a lot of convincing to part with nearly £1800 for a steel frame and fork

Very different. Obviously if speed over rough ground is a priority and you're a capable rider then sus is good, but it has to get suprisingly fast and rough before the Jones loses out in a big way. If you 'get' rigid bikes, this is like the AM/FR version - you can handle a Jones way better than rigid bikes that are sus-corrected or based on 'normal' mtb format. What Jeff says about them on the site is pretty spot-on imo. You need to try one.

Sounds like I do. I raced a 26 inch rigid through the winter last year so I'm not a newb to the whole rigid thing. My new 29er bike will also be rigid too.

Maybe a demo on one is needed then. What are those bars like to ride? they look horrendous!

Jamesp - Is your comment re FR rigid based on how easy it is to lift the jones front end versus something like a swift?

Yes unless you go custom but he's not talking orders at the moment.

Edit - but as per tazzy's comment there were apparently some larger Ti ones made a while ago.

Basically yes, the rider's in what I think is a much better position for technical riding, but overall stiffness of the bike too. The truss fork + 135mm front wheel rides out of situations where a 470mm long cr-mo fork / std wheel just twangs. Braking down really steep stuff is totally different.
And then it still feels super comfy to ride 100 miles or more on.

what's the steel diamond/unicrown combo good for guys? (aside from easing the budget a tad compared to sf). are you saying that the truss upgrade is a no-brainer really? (visually I can't get my head around the truss yet).

I used to have three Jones'. Probably a bit excessive. Now down to one which runs as a 69er. And currently building a 650b wheel for the front for giggles.

I prefer the space frame ti for low weight, low standover and generally playfulness.
The diamond frame was great for stability and a plough through anything feel. I had it a with a Rohloff which worked brilliantly (had specific Rohloff cable routing).

I'll buy another diamond frame eventually for bikepacking. I preferred the look of the straight unicrown fork though...

tried on the diamond, didn't like as much, went back to the loops. I'm not a fan of the original ones though as they are too narrow for my monkey boy build. The new wider ones are lush.

As SSS says "I'd sell any bike before the Jones" 4 months ago I had a swap around and fitted my Alfine 11 speed on it but the constant problems I was having with the gears I stopped riding it.
The geared hub went off for a service under warranty and took it for it's first ride last weekend and I fell straight back in love with it all over again even after 1 ride.

Can you see them in all that mess? )

They're however Jeff does them, unknown thick cork grips and Cinelli tape. The bars / grips were bought s/h and I've done ~1800 miles on them since buying them. I tried my best to do the same on the other bars with Velo cork grips and tape, nice enough but not quite the same. Got some Cinelli tape here and will buy more grips off Jeff for next time.

Though they're the loop compared to the original H bar not the cut loop.
Oh and one of the H bars is the HD version and the other is the standard version.

For anyone that is interested. 😕

They're still the same geometry though they have had a few tweeks on knee clearance and tyre clearance.
Even the original 100mm hub version have the same geometry. Though the inability to use a fat tyre is a bit of a draw back.

Sorry, it might just be too early in the morning for me to work it out, but ... are the (aluminum) Loops coming out at 690mm tip-to-tip now, or are they still 660mm (like mine are)?

I love the ones on my Swift, but that extra 30mm would be great ...

EDIT:
Hmm, or too early for me to bother looking at the Jones website I 'spose - which I've now done. Sorry, have the thread back now ... 🙄

All this Jones talk. Tuppence from me... I've a test bike here in Sussex if it helps, and can get stuff to CTBM and Sideways and Bothy Bikes easily enough. I'm also happy to travel around meeting people for rides on their local trails on a Jones so they can really test things. They ride good.

And big hello to Kenny :O)

Yes - I'm importer. But not important. Knards are Surly thing so although Jeff has some in Oregon to test and fiddle with I've no notion of UK availability. But Charlie (CTBM) is linked in to their distribution channels so he'll have a much better idea. He might be along in a bit, I might need to nudge him.

sorry, I was being a div and conflating jones/surly 😳

Ive put my emial address in CTBM's auto-fatkit-trumpet database so will just have to wait and see. I was wondering what the inflated dimensions of the tyre might be on a gordo and whether I could stuff it in a 100mmQR jones truss fork....

Stoner - Jeff is due to report back on 100mm truss fork fitting. I'll let you know. Surly's blog has some dimensions over at http://surlybikes.com/blog/your_rabbit_hole_looks_knardy that should help.

Mattjg - a ride on the North Downs should be very possible. Saturday rather than sunday better for me, although week days doable too. Feel free to email me, biff@yesweareontheweb.com to sort something.

oh, well found lads. Thats a great help.

a P35 nominally has the same dims as my gordo then, so just need to get the tape measure out and see if "The Knard 3.0 tire on a Velocity P35 will be 76.7mm wide and have a diameter of 778.6mm." will fit in the fork.

As it happens I ride RR 2.4 on my gordo, which comes in at 61mm wide and plenty of radial room. SO if the RR on the rabbit hole is 66mm/752mm, It may just squeeze.

*heads off to shed with tape measure...*

Well that's put paid to my optimism 🙁

There's no chance it's going to fit. There's probably just enough clearance on the front truss but not the rear fork legs.

My RR on 35mm gordo is 746mm x 61mm and there's probably just enough clearance for an RR on a Rabbit Hole at 752mm x 66mm

BUT...

there's not the room to go up to 77mm wide AND 779mm diameter as the legs start to taper in to the crown too quickly.

RR 2.4" on Gordo 35mm, Jones 29er 100mm fork

Peanut - South Devon isn't a regular stomping ground but how far are you from Swanage, Dorset? Charlie has a Jones for riding there. The next best option is an event/race where I (or another friendly Jones owner might be). I do get about though so will add South Devon to my list of places to take my bike and contact you if I'm heading that way.

Clink (and others) - AFAIK Jeff wants to do (more) Ti and lots more besides but Jones Bicycles is just Jeff (and Sheila – Mrs Jones) with no 'big company' behind the scenes. It's all down to time, money and passion. Jeff has the latter in abundance, the other two are trickier.

cheers martin - unfortunately that's his 135mm unicrown and truss forks he's reviewing. I have the older 100mm truss and there's just not the room.
I reckon my fatness is limited to a 2.4" tyre on 35mm, maybe 50mm, rim.
Im OK with that as the RR + Gordo has been very good - and it's quite light too.

I'm too am limited by the 100mm fork.

Currently running P35s with Geax 2.3 Gatos which can be run at pretty low pressure but I'd love to be able to run a Knard.
