I want something with a bit of strength as it'll be used for bashing over roots and the odd radcore poorly judged jump. Going to be running an on one floater or maybe a bud for tyre, still undecided so any thoughts there would be helpful. I'm thinking along the lines of holed rolling daryl or would I better off with a marge light? Is the wider rim better for trail riding or narrower with the marge? I'm about 100kg loaded up so not the lightest in the world.

Ta very much

I don't think you need a double walled rim, I use a jones 72mm rim, which is drilled, I've never had a rim strike........ I reckon a Marge light would be ok......but you may not be able to run pressures as low as a wider rim though. I wouldn't go bigger than 80mm. If you're weight conscious - go Marge ligh, if not then a jones 72mm, or similar.

Rabbit Hole for 29+ or Rolling Darryl for 26x4.

Oh and a Rabbit Hole on the back too.

Both rims can be set up toobless piss easy.

I've never had a rim strike.

You either run your tyre way to hard or ride like a southern mincer. 😉

Ok, that's one for the darryl and two for marge light with the second coming from a shop I just phoned. Stu, is there a reason you prefer the darryl? Finally, does it really make a blind bit of difference on a 4 inch tyre apart from weight?

Rabbit hole and 29+ for my space frame when it comes, next week fingers crossed, Charlie the bike monger advised that over the fat front, so i am putting my faith in him.
Stu, how do you get them 'toobless' then? please share.

Well I rode some pretty rocky stuff a few weeks ago in Wales. - granted on the first day - I did pump up my tires about 1 psi more than normal, not for fear of rim strikes, but because I was using a Nate, and I wanted to minimise rolling resistance. However subsequently - I did lower pressure to normal, for comfort!

Rim width - simples, the wider you go, the lower the pressure. 50 mm you won't get any benefit from a 4.8" tire though. Jeff runs a 72mm rim, any wider and it's more about floatation - which doesn't make much sense in a half fat bike.

Nate/rabbit hole is nice, but it's not true fat though 😉

One wrap of Gorila Tape and bang a valve in.
For infation fit a tube and blow it up until the beads snap out onto the rim.
Then remove the tube without breaking the bead seal on the other side.
Put your valve back in, turn the wheel over so the unsealed side faces down and inflate until that bead snaps back on.
remove the valve core and add your favourite monkey spunk.
shake about a bit and ride. 😀

Stu, inflate with a floor pump or do you have a compressor?

If your favourite monkey is tired can you use your second favourite?

Pop.
No if your monkey is running dry you need to wait until he is re charged.
Monkeyporn and unlimeted amounts of bananas should help.

Whilst I can definitely see the benefit of the knard from giving one a try, albeit in semi form on a p35, it didn't seem to offer the same root, lump, bump absorbing fun that the fat fronted jones I had a go on did for the riding I want to do on it. Might well get one built up at some point with a rabbit hole for variation though.

Very happy I had a test ride on a bike which on paper is too small for me though. Stupid amount of fun for a rigid bike albeit it has now cost me a chunk of money 😀

In all honesty I think it's the 50mm rim that gives the Knard it's fun aspect.
Even the Ardent is massive on the RH rim.

On fast rocky stuff it realy does seem to be within 95% of a Rolling D with a 4" tyre but so much better on the climbs.

I've not put my fat wheel back in since i've had the RH/Knard combo

Gotama, thanks I've been pondering the wheel options for a Jones.
