As I remember, it used to be considered very important last time alloy jockey wheels were in vogue back when xtr was 8 speed, and pretty much the reason non Shimano jockey wheels disappeared.
They now seem to be making a come back with people regularly suggesting tacx or bbb or drooling over kcnc and now hope.
Is float not as important any more now it's all nine and ten speed.
it's still important in that shimano shifters are designed to work with mechs with floating jockey wheels.
No float can cause problems if you have gritty cables and a sloppy mech, but most of the time it'll run OK.
SRAM don't have floating jockeys as their system is less prone to cable drag effects as the shifters pull more cable.
Just wonder if kit has got better to the point of not needing float as people used to gripe about shiny jockey wheels and now they done.
Are we saying that aftermarket jockey wheels don't have any float? (its only the top one that needs it i think??)
Yes, that's what I'm (were) saying.
shiny bling ones for £15 a pair... Wonder what they are like.
Why though? It doesn't sounds like its a difficult thing to achieve and Shimano clearly think its worth it to help shifting.

I think it is.
With non floating designs the rear mech becomes very sensitive to cable tension/setup, can't be bothered with them for that reason.
