Without going in to the stove debate could anyone advise on Jetboils?

A lot of my gfs kayaking mates have them and she's asked for one for her birthday, it'll be predominantly used for making coffee quickly

Is the Flash Java the best way to go here, or is there a better alternative with the press bought seperate?

It'd need to boil a litre'ish ideally in one hit

I have a bunch of stoves from pocket rocket, trangia to whisperlight, best tool for the job and all that, while being heavy and me not liking disposable gas cylinders the jet boil does fit the bill of coffee fast with absolute minimal faff.

Oh..whisperlights...I still remember a mate looking at my black hands then saying 'teas on then!' 🙂

My wife has both the Aeropress and Aeropress Go for coffee making duties.

Stovewise - the Jetboil and clones are fine, if a little bulky, but if she's kayaking then that's not really a problem. You could partially offset the disposable cylinder problem by getting one of the refill kits.

Not really much debate to be had, for fast boiling of water a jetboil is hard to beat, for speed or economy. It’s not just convenience, it uses about half the fuel of a regular gas stove.
I haven’t made coffee on mine though so can’t help with that.
Mine isn’t an actual jetboil, its the alpkit copy.
Almost as good, considerably cheaper.

Yes but incompetence knows no bounds. You can even simmer with them even though msr say you cannot.

That said I don't think they are the right tool for the job here.

Jet boil -proper one. Many of the generic copies (probably all the same manufacturer) don't like much less than a full gas can.

Refilling your cannister still requires a donor cannister to waste.....but beats taking spare cannisters as you have no idea what you have in the current one.

Alpkit here too, martymac's points spot on.

But she wants a jetboil, just get her one, life's too short. 🙂

You can weigh them to find out roughly how much is left. The little ones weigh about 100g when empty, 200 ish when full.

My alpkit clone one has somehow deformed now, and stuff won't fit in nicely. I have one from Planet X that appears to be exactly the same manufacturer, but I haven't used it yet.

Thanks all, yeah has to be jetboil, my specific question was regarding 'which' Jetboil as they have quite a few options, is the flash java the way to go here

Agreed Trailrat, I do love my whipserlight, i just use it infrequently, winter camps have dropped off a bit in the last few years, which means i always think i can get away with cleaning it next time, hence the black hands...

I returned the alpkit one for this reason. Less than half a cannister and you got into boil times that made a meths stove look quick.

If she wants to do any actual cooking, the Minimo is better as you can adjust the temp (not sure you can on any of the others?) and the pot shape is better for stirring/eating etc. If it’s literally just for boiling water, any of them will do the job great.

As others I went for the alpkit and a good drop of gear it is to, then team up with an aeropress you have a great bit of kit.

Reflecting on your issue with gas ( me also) recently I have gone lightweight niche.

It’s an Alpkit myti 650 with a stormin cone stove and a stormin burner and base.

Boil time is under 5 mins for 600 ml and is as light as heck with everything thing you see going inside the mug as well as a small lighter

The only thing I've used that boils faster than a jetboil is an MSR Reactor. Similar design so everything connects. But the burner is completely different. Almost completely windproof and alot more powerful than a normal burner style.

Alpkit copy of the Jetboil is supposed to be average, boil times/gas usage nowhere near as impressive

I have an old jetboil that I used to use in the car/van, now have changed that to a Primus ETA lite+

If she wants a jetboil get the flash. it's bigger and has an integrated piezo igniter

I prefer msr windburner to the jetboil, it also has a coffee press attachment you can buy and it stores neatly but I got an aeropress go instead

@montylikesbeer how does that caldera cone pack down? Does it fit neatly in the mug? Cheers.

I’ve got the alpkit version, it’s failed three times now(replaces twice) and I won’t bother with it now. Mother in laws jetboil has been superb

Have you seen the Jetboil Stove Finder:

Stove finder

It gives you a wee questionnaire to help narrow your search.

I'll second those above who say the cheaper (Alpkit/PX etc) clones are not as quick or efficient as the pricier ones.

Also a useful table with several brands on here: Next Challenge.

My jetboil has been awesome.

I have the smaller coffee version with the cafetiere press down thing and a larger version with bowls eclosed for food/soup.

It goes everywhere with me, never fails, but you do have to watch closely as it boild up quickly - exploded in my wifes face because she allowed the pressure to build as it boiled up! *She was okay, but annoyed...!

I have a Sol which they don't make anymore (not sure what they replaced it with) and it was alot better in the cold /with emptier cans, due to a different valve. The ignitor burned out quicky, so generally light it with a firesteel.

I stopped making coffee in it when everything else got tainted !

That is my experience with all gas stoves using butane propane mix. Basically you distil off the Propane first leaving Butan which is useless if its cold. The only way round this is a gas stove that preheats the fuel. Do Jetboils preheat the fuel?

I actually tried the Alpkit one with a couple of different types of gas and it was in the house so definitely not just that issue although I could see how that might be the case.
