I didn't think anyone at BC would have had the balls to do this.

Balls or political correctness?

Everyone deserves to be treated with respect no matter if you're an average joe or Olympic athlete.

I imagine there was too much evidence against Sutton for BC to able to sweep it under the carpet as they would usually try and do.

Fingers crossed the independent panel review will, in the long term, lead to a turn around in the whole culture at BC.

Mrs Sutton is sailing very close to slander/libel with her comments if Jess Varnish is in a vengeful frame of mind. Very, very unwise behaviour.

Assuming you mean

his wife Abbie tweeted: “Two words spring to mind when the word liar is used #jessvarnish #neverhappened

Really low behaviour. She's clearly another class act like her husband.

That is foolish. JV would have to be feeling particularly magnanimous not to rise to that with legal asssitance

Balls or political correctness?

I would suggest neither.

An interesting few minutes on the Today programme just now. The Times cycling journalist made what I would regard as valid comments when asked about the situation, namely when asked if loosing Sutton before the games damaged the result pointed out it could be that without his apparently corrosive presence they may well have done better. When the presenter asked if it required such a culture to succeed in sport at elite level the jounalist essentially said if it takes such practices to gain gold medals, are they worth it?

damaged the result
Where they did really well and better than everyone had been expecting? Makes the point about losing the corrosive atmosphere more persuasive.

Is it a bit cynical to think that now this complaint has been upheld the wider investigation into the culture will say "turns out everything's fine, it was just that one guy".

There's a cynical part of me that thinks British Cylcing is in such a mess over Therapeutic Use Exemption drug use that they're just hauling up the white flag over this complaint.
Having said that, an Aussie coach saying "Sheila, your ass is too fat to change lanes" rings true

Balls or political correctness?

Both? Neither? Why does it matter if they've done the right thing?

Unless you think otherwise?

Sounds like there was plenty of evidence against Sutton. Some people have difficulty distinguishing between upholding anti discrimination rules and political correctness. Sometimes it's because they hold discriminatory views themselves and don't want to face up to it.

there is also a case for the coaching system to be critically reviewed for two reasons, cutting rider shouldn't be a surprise for them, if you spend a year or so essentially lying that they were achieving performance targets. Secondly the selection for qualifying events for the Olympics essentially shafted the athlete and showed in hindsight that performance decisions had already been made despite what the athlete was being told

the BC system is infamous for having "favourites" and cutting riders "by surprise" and has been for at least 10 years

Is it only me that when asked to associate two words with liar gets 'pants' and 'fire'?

Yep. The thing is, BC is a workplace. If you are a manager, and you "sail close to the wind" in your use of language towards your employees, then you leave yourself vulnerable to complaints like this.

Sutton "sailed close to the wind" often, apparently. Most of the time, it was tolerated because "that's just Shane" and he was a fine coach. But when Jess Varnish felt aggrieved for being dropped, he had given her all the ammunition she needed in order to make a complaint and have it upheld.

I'm sure Sutton's remarks had "context" but an employment tribunal doesn't care about context.

Hopefully no other female employee at BC will be told to "go and have a baby", and no other disabled person there will be called a "wobbly" or a "gimp"*

*and no, the fact that some Paralympic athletes didn't seem to mind being called these names does not make any difference.

I can't imagine a 'context' where any of the quotes attributed to him become acceptable.

He's a dinosaur in the wrong job. He'll be fine teaching a male group in the back of beyond.

In the real world, in the 21st Century, he looks like a throwback to another era.

Odds on the Australian track team calling him in to help kick our arses in 2020?

Protecting lottery funding is now a priority for BC.

Only to round up sheep.

Stupid creatures respond to being driven. Anything more intelligent needs to be lead.

I'm not sure he has the equipment for that.

"Exclusive" interview with Suton in the Torygraph. I am afraid it hasn't convinced me of his innocence. Reading between the lines it seems he may well be getting some of his own medicine in terms of decision making behind his back with poor communication. Sow the wind.....

Abbie {Sutton} tweeted: “Two words spring to mind when the word liar is used #jessvarnish #neverhappened"

Part of me would like Jess to follow up on that careless comment, in light of Jess' complaint being upheld.

Is anyone thinking about applying?

"The sport's governing body has specified that it is looking for “an outstanding leader who will harness full responsibility for driving business growth, increased participation and ensuring effective governance of an internationally renowned sporting organisation”."

One of the job interview questions might be how would you achieve
" effective governance of an internationally renowned sporting organisation"?

One of the things that British Cycling are required to do to keep their lottery funding.
