You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Just as we are all locked down it gives time for some long needed wrenching on my 2018 jeffsy carbon ....and it took me a while but the pedal wobble is actually a loose insert on the race face carbon crank - boo! A quick search seems to show other have had this so emailed silverfish and yt so we shall see !
However then find the non drive side bb bearing is on its way out and that’s another whole kettle of fish - is it worth to replace with hope pf41 bb or should I downsize the axle to a 24 and allow some bigger bearings ?
Time on hands to think but would appreciate help from the collective hive singletrack mind please ?
Thanks all
Stay safe !

This x1000
Exactly the same happened to me, and to my riding buddy who also has a Jeff
Silverfish were spot on with the crank warranty, so don’t worry about that. You should get the latest version of the crank. Some heftier riders asked Silverfish to swap the crank for a RF Turbine as it’s a bit stronger (but heavier)
The RaceFace BB is distinctly average but if you buy the same again you can carefully pick the inner seals off before fitting (pad spring works well) and jam pack with grease. Did this on mine and got well over a year of frequent use
I’m not convinced by the Hope PF41. The sealing doesn’t look great. The Praxis one looks a bit better. In the end I just went for a £35 RF replacement as above
Op, once you get the warranty cranks I'd sell them on. They are likely to go again.
This also lets you go 24mm and you can fit a better BB.
I've fitted the Hope BB. In truth it's not really a BB, just 2 bearings with a slight lip on. It can't be serviced. It's lasted ok so far but I've got some carbon sram cranks ready now for when it goes to allow me to fit a 22/24mm serviceable BB.
I don't relish pressing a new unservicable BB into a carbon frame very often!
There's a couple of options if you stick with the 30mm cranks -
Hope pf31 BB which doesn't have the connecting tube. £60
Chris King which does have a connecting tube. £150ish
Cane Creek Hellbender Neo with no connecting tube, but does have the new MTRX solid oil bearings. £120
Have a look for my thread if you're interested in the CC BB.
If you go for a 24mm crank then there's a few more PF41 options, with bigger bearings and screw together BB shells.
I wanted to try the hellbender bearings which only come in 30mm at the moment so I stuck with my E13 cranks.
Thanks all - ‘nice’ to know not on my own in this murky tech field ...seems sensible to step down to 24 as the cinch crankset allows that but any recommends on BB that are pf41 with a 24 axle ? Hope do one but starting to get confused on others? Do they all need a bearing press or careful tapping ? Are any of the 24 mm axle bb’s having serviceable bearings ?
Ta11 the hellbender from cc looks good with a good name but racks u the cost especially if it needs a tool as well.
Thanks and happy Easter !
You'll need 2 tools, one for removal and a press to fit the new BB.
Thanks to all ...still juggling which bb to go for
Hope - £50 better quality bit little sealing - so maybe 2 years use
Cane creek - £120 new design of bearing and I think 2 year guarantee
Chris king £145 but 5 year guarantee ...
However the only king one I find at chain react is the press fit 30 which I am suspicious is a bb30 standard not the pf41 standard. If the king is guaranteed for 5 years it might be worth it otherwise may just stick with hope and replace / grease often ...
Anyone recommend one of the cheap threaded bar bearing press’s to be used bb as well as headset ?
