While I was putting the fork back on the bike (Jeffsy CF) I decided to swap the headset for a more bling Cane Creek 110 which really is very nice.

When I did it all up, there was movement (visible to the naked eye) that I couldn't adjust out and looking closer, the top bearing doesn't have the same profile.

So I popped back in the old bearing (the top one was in quite good nick visually at least) and did it all back up, keeping the new top headset cover with the old bearing.  It all seemed to go together nicely and seems OK.  There's a tiny tiny bit of movement; impercetible to the naked eye, but can just feel it with a finger on the headset cover/frame.  I may be able to adjust it a bit better, I haven't tried.

Will I die using the old bearing with the new heasdet cover?  Does anyone what ref the stock top bearing is (I can take it apart and try and read a reference but was getting rushed as it took much much longer than I thought) ?  I can't find details on the headset that YT list as stock, and I innocently assumed that one IS 41/28.6 was the same as another.

Any advice?

On my cf jeffsy I ordered the direct replacements as so little info is available regarding the angle of the bearing surfaces etc. 😞

Replaced lower bearing and a regreased top one as it wasn't too bad.

You've probably done a good upgrade with just the New top cap as the standard one is ridiculously cr@p!.

All that said, there really shouldn't be any play. You sure it's not movement of the brake pads as you rock it with the brake on??

I'm now wondering if the bearing in the bottom isn't wrong now...  *sigh* will take apart and measure up and hopefully can see some bearing references.

Thanks poop.

Mine has play I'm struggling to adjust out and I've not changed anything, it's factory standard.  Will be taking it all apart soon

Struggling with play in mine too, it's a replacement headset. On the back of this thread I'm going to put the original top bearing back in tonight & see if it's any better on the play front, it'll still be a notchy corroded mess on rotation 🙁
