Who's had sessions with both?

Who's better?

Who'd win in a knife fight?

think they're probably a bit to 'zen' to fight 😉

Which ever one you live closer too, both very good from what I hear from various sources. 😀

Ed's got a beard, so he's better.

I have no doubt Tony could handle himself in a fight. He wouldn't use a knife though. Maybe a branch.

What if you live equal distance from both?

Have had the pleasure of Ed's tutelage.

Think Ed would be a better tramp/busker.

I'm one of th very few who has been coached by both. I also live pretty much in the middle. You'll learn a lot from both but now I and a mate have answered this question for ourselves first hand, all my coaching in the future will come from Jedi. We both think Tony has made more of a difference to our riding, not by a little but, but by a country mile. In fact, by so much, that I wonder why the two of them get compared so directly.

They don't just teach differently, they actually teach different stuff. For me, the Jedi stuff makes so much more sense.

Tony not only does excellent training, but also does an excellent line of freshly brewed coffee.

I have no idea if the bearded one does

I've been to both - a 1to1 with Tony, and an Alps Prep course in Hebden with Ed. They are very different in both methods and riding styles.

For me, Tony has a slight edge, but I am currently considering going back to both.

For balance, I didn't get a coffee from Jedi(too busy correcting my faults), whereas with Ed it was pub lunch and a pint!!

I've had two sessions with Ed and one with Jedi.

The first "Ed" session was just what I needed and it was excellent.

The second "Ed" session wasn't so good but that was because the others in the group weren't really up to much so I didn't feel it developed me as a rider. Just wasted a day and £60.

As my time is precious, I then went for a one to one with Jedi. It was excellent, but cost a lot more obviously.

On balance, I'd say They are both good but, in a group situation, you pays your money and takes your chance. If you are serious about developing your riding, go one to one. It takes any uncertainty out.

I'm not even sure they really teach the same things, other than it's all biking obviously?

I also think it's great that brilliant people like Tony and Ed can both work, and develop a following in such a fun industry. I'd bl**dy love to have either of their jobs! hmmm, wonder if i could do Eds now he's missing his head??? 😉

Not saying it's a bad job. However, not always what people think.

Basically you are a teacher / coach. However, unlike many teaching / coaching jobs, you can be standing in the rain / cold and sometimes having to deal with other distractions, when you are teaching / trying your best to minimise risk etc.

Like I say, not saying its a bad job, but you are at the end of the day coaching, not going for a ride with your mates, that said, you do meet some really nice people. Well I have anyway :o)

They both seem to have good reputations but what I'd like is a venn diagram of what they specialise cos I'd be more interested in the one who can get me riding skinnies and big jumps properly.

I've seen them wrestle each other naked apart from a generous layer of warm goose fat.. The results obviously weren't pretty but I know who I'd put my money on next time..

I wasn't aware that either of them were involved in cycling tuition, or even that they rode bikes!

Seeing the kind of stuff Jedi does (going solely by the pictures and chatter around his stuff) I would love to be able to do it, but big woodwork just isn't my kind of thing. I would bottle it at best, die at worst. Ed made a huge difference in a day to my trail riding in a mixed group and I enjoyed every minute. Including the pub lunch 🙂

Is it not horses for courses?

@Tracker - the vast majority of the students don't ride the woodwork. I went to Tony explicitly for normal trail riding, we actually did very little jumping as that isn't what I wanted to focus on

Precisely this^^^

You arrive at Tonys, and spend a few mins gawping at the massive gap jumps. Then Tony has you cycling around a cone, and over a small stick for an hr.............

Once you get the basics right, then you can start to play with the big boys !

(I'm still stuck at the stick level tbh 😉

That's actually you - others can help you along the way, but you'll be putting the effort it. You might learn a lot in a day, but it's the practice that comes after that'll get you to where you want to be.

I've been to both and they did the best they could with what they had to work with... 🙁

I got different things from both to be fair and wouldn't like to pick one or the other as being the "best". I've incorporated what they've taught into my riding which has definitely improved and even when I'm not exactly on form I at least know what I should be doing.

My jump skills part of the Jedi day got cancelled due to high winds so I can't really comment on this aspect of the day but I'm sure it would have been as good as the rest of the session. Jedi does a good line in fireside coffees though...

So yeah - in a nutshell they're good but different.

I am 61
mountain biking for 15 years
Gap jumping after 3 hours with Jedi !! how can you not be pleased with that,
tony seems to be able to instil confidence and release your potential.
The year before I did the 725 ft bungee at verzasca (golden eye) but my day with tony was unforgettable and immense and brought me more satisfaction

Jedi is in Hertford. A fair drive, but worth it for me at least. There are no decent skills instructors in Bristol. I've looked.

Look deep into Ed's eyes and you'll know that he's seen things that no man should ever see. (Calderdale can do that)
That alone is reason enough ..... Vaya con Ed amigo

Going by the videos:

Ed: natural stuff.

Jedi: more Jumpy/Northshore/berms/Trail Centre focused stuff.

I've probably got that completely wrong and in the interest of fairness I'd like to try both.

Might have to save up some cash up for a one to one with each.

I thought that before I went to Jedi. I thought his custom build area was"too artificial" for the natural Peaks riding I do.

How wrong was I!

Tony only teaches about three things. It's up to your where you apply them.

I've done both, in fact three. Learnt a lot from both Jedi did have good coffee.
In the end some coaches you connect with, and that's an entirely personal thing. The coach I've been back to twice, and about to book again is John Paul or Aline in Sheffield. Just connect really well with him, and I've got consistently faster and happier on the bike since doing some days with JP

I ended up at Ed as Jedi was just too far for me to get to. And as a result I have been to see Ed twice and am planning on sorting out a 1:1 with him next year. He has single-handly revolutionised my riding. I am sure Jedi would have done the same though as never heard a bad word about either.

Oh and Ed is a dude 😀

Bit of an Ed fan-girl now - even have the hoody!

I've done a day with Ed and really enjoyed it. I really liked the way that he broke things down into pretty simple steps. I also really enjoyed the riding in Hebden. Ed was easy to get to for me because I was able to stop off with some Family in Sheffield and make a real weekend out of it.

I can't comment on Jedi, but would like to do a day with him in the new year.

I had a session with Ed recently and all I can say was he is a great guy and made a real difference to the way I approach trail problems.

He has a great style and he is genuinely a really nice person to spend a day riding with.

I'm sure Jedi is equally as good; are we comparing apples with apples?

And as for the The Chop; just wish I could play the didge (at all).

Chris

Wrecker and BristolBikeproject what about Katy Curd?
she all right for a girl.... 😉 (we was on the same CTC skill course)
Or there is ME! I be happy to travel Bristol way for a small group or 1to1 coaching. (I do ride at Bristol a far bit)

I think pedalprogression are Bristol/Ashton court based. I haven't used them myself yet, but my mate has and he rates them highly. I am trying to sort out a mornings coaching with them some time in the new year.
