I've stripped the thread on two Isla bike brake levers now (after taking great care) which has me wondering about a repair over binning them.
Has anyone used JB Weld / Gorilla Weld to perform a similar repair. Idea is to fill the threaded area and re-tap to the original 6mm diameter. If it's string enough it should I think work in theory?
I think not. Regardless of the marketing it is still only epoxy so I think it will strip when you tap it.
If you wanted to repair I'd try using it as a threadlock. It might hold the bolt well enough after it dries?
Take it you can't fit a helicoil insert? (Don't know the exact details obviously, so ignore if useless!)
Probably wont take the force applied by the brakes. Ive used it to plug a crack in a crankcase, but it just had to stop an oil leak and crank case pressure, which was not much.
Its not metal and wont work like metal, its just glue with added marketing.
Good thing I asked, I did have my doubts.
Will google helical now.
Current bolt is 6mm, would a 7mm tap and bolt be a better route or is that to close to the stripped 6mm threads?
7mm tap and bolt would work
Helicoil is the best option. I have some M6 helicoils I think if you are anywhere near me in edinburgh
Thanks for the offer but I'm Leeds. I'm tempted to give the 7mm tap a go if I can source a 7mm bolt for a good price, which look to be rare on eBay.
You could put a longer 6mm bolt all the way through the clamp hole and stick a nyloc nut on the rear, no tapping or heilcoils required but slightly less neat looking.
