Hi All,

A few years ago I rode what I believe is the 'classic' Jacobs Ladder route. I have read a lot on here about the current works on Rushup Edge, and also some other trail resurfacing that has happened since I last rode the route (in around 2010)

I had been planning on a trip down to do the same route in 2 weeks time. Can anyone with local knowledge advise me on whether the route is still worth a trip down from Newcastle upon Tyne? Or is there a better alternative in the North Peaks area?

It's a very subjective question I know, but I rated the ride pretty highly last time and I am hoping to avoid disappointing the other guys who are coming on the trip.

The rest of the route is worth doing IMO. Jacobs ladder, Mam Tor and Roych Clough are all still a hoot.

Where do you start from? If you start from Hayfield you'll get a added cheeky descent back to hayfield at the end of the ride too but this does mean your first big descent would be Jacobs Ladder

I think we started from Edale last time, but an extra descent wouldn't be a bad thing

The classic Edale loop is the one I mentioned on

(note I said Hope instead of Edale as start point by mistake). Call into 18 bikes in Hope they have route maps on the wall too as well as being a great shop

The works on the track going up towards Rushup Edge only affect a tiny part of that route. The mud along Rushup Edge is horrible right now (unless you ride the footpath on the other side of the wall!). Coldwell Clough's got some new gravel on it, but not massively different to 2010. And one tiny bit of Roych Clough has been sympathetically restored so that mere mortals stand a better chance of clearing it.

Chapel Gate is very different now, but I'd presume you'll use Rushup Edge and Mam Tor routes which make for a better ride anyway.

The remainder is pretty much like it was in 2010! The scenery is still superb, too.

It's a great ride, I doubt anyone will be disappointed, perhaps only by the low mileage count which I know is important to some people... You could always add some stuff in the Hope Valley (loop to include Jaggers Clough and Cavedale, maybe). Or add some more around Hayfield - Kinder Reservoir and Middle Moor?

That's great info, cheers. Sounds like I can still look forward to a good weekends riding. Really appreciate the input
