Riding Jacobs ladder route from edale on Saturday. Does anyone know what it's like up there at the moment . Cheers
Jacobs ladder is pure rocks so will be fine. Probably going to be some slop around Mam Tor, particularly the descents down into Edale from Hollins Cross. This is always good at this time of year http://peakdistrictmtb.org/project/all-weather-route-peak-district-mtb/?fbclid=IwAR02ytipA70NHSjaHwgr9hXl0OJM1eXeeCMevyu10LJ9Ap3IbuiRzHCMXOY
We are riding up to hollins cross from bababooth so could be mushy
Bit greasy up to Hollins Cross an down to Backtor Farm. All rideable without dabbing and wasn't a bogfest last week. As above, Jacobs is all rocks so no issues there. If you're riding Rushup Edge that'll be a bit messy, it always is this time of year, unless its frozen.
I am planning on riding Edale - Hayfield - Edale on Sunday and had completely forgotten about the Rushup Edge section (it's been a while). Thanks for the reminder.
It's a while since I have been up this way and was thinking of doing it Saturday - Is the by-way off the top of Rushup actually physically blocked or is it, ahem, passable?
Dawson - no barriers or any blockages on the Rushup descent down to the road. The loose stone also seems to have thinned out a lot since the early days of DCC carrying out trail "improvements".
Was up there Sunday. Across the top of Rushup was OK (but TBH we may have accidentally taken the right hand path over the top rather than the left). Rushup decent is better than it has been for years, or at least since the stones were first put down. Roych and Mount Famine were fine. Decent down to Coldwell Clough was a bit soft in places. Jacob's Ladder absolutely fine.
The relatively short 'boggy' section along Rushup Edge is always rideable regardless. It just gets a bit slithery and requires more low cunning and the ability to maintain forward momentum in the face of slime. I kind of like its nadgery tricksiness.
If you're truly desperate, you could could avoid it by descending Chapel Gate then heading straight up Jacob's at the bottom. Or doing that then riding up the Mam Nick / Barber Booth climb on the road and clicking back onto Mam Tor at the top. Or riding the footpath by 'not seeing' the gate where the bridleway splits off, though if you do that at the weekend, you can expect lots of filthy looks from grumpy walkers and verbal abuse from the self-appointed trail police.
You rarely get proper mud round here tbh though, just varying degrees of gritty sludge.
Had a lovely dog walk yesterday in the area. Will be riding it Tuesday all being well. We walked from Edale up chapel gate along rushup over mam tor to hollins cross then back via the bridal way past greenlands.
The conditions are almost perfect. A bit of snow still left in the shade of the wall at the very top of rushup and a big puddle at top of chapel gate that never goes (but you won’t be riding that part anyway). The usually slithery rutted section from Greenlands to hollins X was mainly tacky with just a few small puddles.
Another gloriously sunny day today and no rain forecast so I’m hoping conditions will be just perfect in terms of grip by 11.30 on Tuesday when I’ll be slogging up from Edale again. Planning to do full Jacobs loop clockwise. Can’t wait.
