Turns out I've got a spare 10speed XT Shadow plus mech in my box of bits, as I run 10 speed 105 shifters and a single ring on my CX bike I thought why not combine the two.
Which of the magic doohickeys is betterer?

Having used (and still currently using) couple of Wolftooth TanPans - that's what I'd recommend!

Tanpan works. I find running it inline better than down by the mech.

+1 for tanpan. Have ten and eleven and both work well.
Tang is right, inline is neater
