looking to get some pro 2 Evos on flow rims and wondered whether people thought one lacing method was better than the other. I know striaght is supposed to provide a tighter wheel but is this necessarily a better thing? I've heard rumours of people snapping more spokes due to them being so tight with a straight pull.
Straight pull should be no tighter than a J type spoke arragement, just less likely to fail in theory. They require the same tension to keep the wheel in shape.
Cheers.
I assumed the would be built with more tension therefore producing a tighter wheel as the spokes would be less likely to fail
The rationale always seems to be that it does away with a weakspot at the J. But I don't think I've ever broken a spoke at the J, or seen one broken that way in the flesh. No doubt it happens but is it really a thing?
Main downer I found was that when I broke a straightpull spoke in fort william, there wasn't a shop in the area that had a single straightpull spoke. But then if you buy Hoops they should come with spares (at least mine did).
All spokes will break eventually....so get ones that are easy to source.

available anywhere.
straight.
available (nearly)nowhere.
got a set of mavic classics hubs I'd like to rebuild.would already have done so if the spokes were easier to find/interchange.

This. Yes Hope keep spares, but if you're not near a Hope dealer you're utterly screwed. J-bend can be had anywhere. I tried to track down a straight pull spoke for a Roval and the only shop I could find with a selection was one in the US who wanted $20 to post one spoke.
Incidentally njee20, Freeborn had them in stock when I needed them.
Edinburgh Bicycle Coop ordered some in for me, but being EBC they took 6 weeks to receive them, never told me they'd arrived, then sent them back after 4 days because I hadn't collected them. But I reckon they could possibly do better.
I bought the SP Crest's as they were lighter 🙂 and they come with spare spokes - they live in my tool box.
Which is chuff all use if you snap one in the Alps 🙂
I'd not not buy a wheelset because they were straight pull, but I'd never opt for them.
