My bike is knackered..
First race in 2 weeks, so thought I'd give the Anthem a quick once over. So in no particular order...
Brakes rubbing constantly, BB not a million miles from being seized solid, forks leaking oil (although to be fair they weren't until I tried to service them), and everytime I lift up the bike by the seat it 'clunks'..
So onto my questions..
The BB is a pressfit. Do I need any special tools, or can I do it at home?
Brakes, they are formulas. I've tried all the usual tricks and I can get them just about rub free, then I take the wheel off and they rub again. Any ideas?
And finally that clunking sound. No lateral movement in the rear triangle. Does it sound like a worn shock bushing?
If the bb needs a professional tool I'll probably take it to the LBS and get them to sort everything, but if not I quite fancy trying to save some cash and do it myself.
You can do the BB with drifts and hammers but if, like me you can't put a shelf up straight, take it to an lbs with the proper tool.
Brakes probably need a proper clean / lube around the pistons and the klunk sounds very much like a shock bushing.
Formula's love to rub, there's a recent thread somewhere
the brakes use to work ok. What lube do I use on the pistons? Is it as simple as pushing them out as far as I dare, clean, then a drop of lube and then push back in?
use brake fluid to lube and clean the pistons. apparently. not sure what type yours take though. use eye protection if its dot fluid
Formula brakes have tiny pad to rotor distances. Check that your rotors are straight, and give the pistons a quick clean and lube with some brake fluid, it's probably DOT 4 or 5. You might as well give them a bleed at the same time to make sure that the pistons will retract all the way in.
The clunking when you lift it at the seat definitely sounds like a worn shock bushing. Order one of the bushing tools off ebay and replace them yourself, it's a pretty easy job.
Bottom bracket and fork sound like a job for a shop with the right tools and experience.
Won't be DOT 5...DOT 4 or 5.1.
DOT 5 is not compatible with 4 or 5.1
Get your shock bushing replaced with a non plastic one. Last longer. I once had a plastic one last two days of a stage race!
