Being a tight wad I thought I'd try these £12 jobs off amazon. Not having any instructions I've put them on the wrong way. Now instead of flapping around waiting to snap off they will act as an icebreaker going through the thorns. There's enough room for operating levers.
Let's see how they fare.

They look good. Much larger than my Nukeproof ones.

Seemed very/to close to the outside end of the grips compared to others I've seen 🤔

Interesting to hear how you get on with them.

Something very odd going there, pretty certain they should be well away from the grip. These ones? https://amzn.eu/d/6a5RZLj

EDIT: looks like you’ve got the mounts on the wrong side

Seems like the closeness would impede getting your hand on or off the bar in a hurry. Why that would matter I'm not sure, but looking at them makes me a little uneasy.

A quick spin up the road and all seems well. Getting my hands out is not a problem. I can fit a spacer between guard and bracket if there's not enough room in thick gloves.

They are pretty flimsy and if fitted correctlyI reckon would snap quite quickly  . It just looks looks a like it's pointing the right way in a stream lined racing kind of way.

I didn't think it was possible to make these abominations look any uglier, but you've somehow managed it.

Well done 😉

I’ve been wearing gloves like these for many years, my first ones were actually Oakley Factory Pilot gloves, but they’re expensive, and you can get almost identical ones sold for air soft gamers. They’re also worn by actual combat troops in most active war zones. I can confirm that they’re capable of breaking a car door mirror, while causing zero injury or discomfort!

Also when clipping tree trunks riding the off-piste trails in the Forest of Dean.

Can someone please organise a singletrackworld group ride?... Just seeing bikes and kit you lot have would be more entertaining than Perrier award winning comedy.

Just in case it had slipped your notice, this is the bike forum…

Back on topic, these are what I wear whenever I’m riding, and they, and their predecessors have done an excellent job of protecting my hands for several decades.

I’m not at all sure I’d trust something like the OP’s bodge for much more than the occasional brambles.

Maybe it’s just me but brambles don’t normally get me on the hands, they ride up my forearms and then serrate the inside of my upper arm. Not sure hand guards would be that effective but happy to hear from those who use them

My solution was onza bar ends. This is from way back in time. The bike got stolen but recovered by the police and returned a few months later. It was completely as stolen except it had lost the bar ends. The thief obviously thought they were too good to return.

10 points if you recognise where the photo is from.

Arrrr, can't get the photo to add. You'll just have to use your imagination

Not surprised! The brambles are miles either side of you in what looks like pure luxurious bliss compared to shoulder-width bramble-alley I tried to wheel my bike on it's rear wheel down the other day.

Superman seat grabs?

Maybe.

I guess there's some reason(s) the big brands leave an opening to the side.
