Saturday's Selkirk MTB Marathon saw my first ride on my new Ritchey P29er... and over the course of the 7 hours, it performed flawlessly. There wasn't a single moment when I wished I have anything more bouncy, more small wheeley, more enduroee, more droppity posty, it was perfect.

Spec:
Ritchey P29er 2015 frame
Fox float 100mm forks
Hope Pro2 on WTB i23 KOM rims
Hope cranks - yes they cost a lot, yes they're lovely
1 x 11, SRAM X01, yes it's more than XTR, yes it performs impeccably
Cannondale SAVE Seatpost - very comfy and light
RaceFace Next 35 bars, in a turbine 70mm stem
XT brakes - not posh, but they work really well and I like the feel of them
Hope grips an a fizik saddle.

It's a stunning ride. Really the best hardtail I've ever ridden. Really smooth riding. It seems to completely remove that 'thud' you usually get on hardtails when you drop off something, it's strange to describe. The handling is superb, just feels very natural and 'mountain bike' like in every situation. Climbing is great, descending is surprisingly inspiring.

I love it. Pics to follow 🙂

100 mm forks

now with 120mm/90mm talas pics after the fred whitton

it is a wonderful frame, interestingly downhill on regular timed section only 1 second slower than my old Turner Sultam 140/120 bike.

THe balance is incredible

vondally.... were you the chap that told me about the closure of the south loop, whilst waiting for your wife in the car park Gisburn trail centre?

it was someone with a rigid Ritchey in the back of his van...

Looks great. I had in mind that the new ones wouldn't be as nice as the old 3-colour ones, but yours has changed my mind.

Surely only red, white and blue will do for one of these? (or maybe red with white panels!) - or am I just old fashioned!!

Lovely bike….

@vondally the new ones have a tapered headtube that takes integrated headset bearings for 1.125 to 1.5" steerer... meaning you can stick pretty much any modern rigid or suss fork in there 🙂

This is why I've been waiting for the new ones. Wanted one of the old ones, but could see the difficulty in getting straight steerer forks. My Singular Swift has a straight steerer and it was a nitemare finding forks for it. That's now back to fully rigid, as it was intended.

am I the only one thinking that the frame looks a little small for the rider given the amount of seatpost showing? oh, and I'd like the graphics to match if it was mine, which it isn't so both my previous comments matter not a jot really

I totally agree Stoo, that was the only downside to getting mine was the straight steerer, I cannot decide whether it is better in rigid, 100 or 120.....oh what a dilemma

Size might be distorted by the angle I took the pic... it was dark. I looks really balanced when you see it in the flesh. Medium 17" frame, with wide bars and a 70mm stem the reach and handling is bang on what I like.

Feels perfect with 100mm fork - Hard to imagine a rigid fork to match it, as the rear is so complaint.

Very nice - what's the rear mud clearance like with a 2.25?

Mud clearance is great. Rode through plenty of mud on the Selkirk marathon on Saturday with no problems... and I brought plenty back with me!

I reckon I could run a 2.35 on there without any bother. I'll take some pics of the clearance for you later

That's quite interesting, the clearance on my P-650b is shocking. I've ended up running 2.1s in the rear just to get some clearance.

mud clearance with the sliding dropouts can be massive or reasonable

It's the one criticism I have of my Curtis XC9 and a function of 67mm BB and short/undented chain stays. I run an Xking 2.2 which is a true 2.1. It works but thick claggy mud will start to gather on the stays and it wouldn't have worked at last years Erlestoke 12 (along with 90% of most other 29ers)

Any more photo's of this Ritchey Stooo?
Nice looking bike and another option I am considering against all the titanium hardtails!
Thanks,
Max

Whatever happened that aggressive hardtail that Ritchey showed a prototype of a while back? More towards the Soul/Slackline end of the spectrum, was a really lovely thing.
