After my old winter wheels developed a crack in the eyelet (hope xc hubs mavic xc717 rim) not bad for how long ago I built them I decided to reuse the hubs and give them a bearing change, so ordered some funky Orange ano rims and some anodised green spokes and dt gold nips!!!!!! Now there built I think I really have gone to far they look horrendous it doesn't help the qr's are old salsa rasta ones ow and I used some orange superstar floating rotors.

Over all good strong build fail on colour clash and very ugly!

That is all gripe over.

At least they're winter wheels, they'll be covered in crap and you've no incentive to clean them either so overall it's a win

Pics here http://s957.photobucket.com/user/cannondaleking1/library/cycle%20parts

Make sure you have sun glasses on

The rims were cheap and the spokes free from a rep trying to get me stock pillar spokes.

I like the look of them. Stick some tan wall tyres on them to complete the look.

There is only one colour unacceptable on wheels. Black. Absolutely horrible. Wheels should sparkle.

I like them - keep them rest of the bike understated and it'll look bob-on.

Anyway the best tinted rims ever were these - Mavic should bring this colour back...

I actually really like them on the raw frame! Might be a bit too busy on a frame with colour.

I have very delicate aesthetic sensibilities and was preparing myself to be horrified.

I quite like that though

Is this a good thread in which to try to sell a pair of red Mavic X517s on M910 XTR hubs? 🙂

Sunsets were ace. Also Citrons.

It's definitely not as bad as you suggested it would be in the thread title. That said, it really works if you have have any connections at all to Ireland, India, or the Ivory Coast. 8)

I think the problem is the bike's a bit tame compared to the wheels.

You're gonna be bold, go all in...

Cheers guys having slept on it not as bad as I first thought and look better in the cold light of day, @ letmetalktomark no been out of the shed in my workshop for about four years now. @wwaswas I built the work bench out of some scrap steel I had left over the legs are 12mm cold drawn seamless tubing and the feet are crown flanges and the top was originally 15mm plate but couldn't get it in my workshop as was too heavy to lift between 8 people haha so I had to use 10mm plate in the end the dam thing won't move or flex its great.

anodised green spokes

Alloy J-bend spokes?! Erm, I'm willing to be educated, but isn't that a recipe for certain death? 😐

I quite like the colours, pleasing in a lairy sort of way.

Nickc no issue there used my favourite thread loc product so will be able to true them if needed and they wont galv for a long time

Mintimperial there stainless spokes with weird and wonderful coating that's anodised like playing but no idea how long it'll stay nice for as its the first time I've used pillar spokes as normally only use DT or sapim.

Are they Pillar spokes? only ones that are easy to get hold of as far as I know.

I have a pair of wheels built with red anodised Pillar butted spokes.

They are pillar spokes had reptile come in to say they would be supplying them as of January so took a gamble as it was free to see what they would be like not bad but no were near as good a quality as DT or sapim

Bling wheels can look good on an all black bike though.

OP, thanks for pics and I stand corrected too.

I quite like them.

Weirdly I think they would look even better on the green frame in your pics folder rather than the silver one, but thats just me!

Its good to be different and hope you enjoy riding them over the coming months. 🙂

they feel different to build with, I'll say that. Though I'm not sure if it is because they are single butted(2.0-1.8) or if it was the rim that felt weird. Normally lightish rims like the newer DT's fell a little soft when building. had the same with Stans too.

That said, DT spokes, even revs feel like they don't give quite as much as, for example, ACI's or Sapim for that matter.

The pillars I have are double butted not single butted fella they do feel a little spongy to build but you can get adequate tensions though, ACI's I'd never build with but find sapim on par with DT Swiss in terms of stiffness

yeah, it is a bit weird, when you're used to tightening until it's 'done', but the pillars just give a little bit more turn. I was always waiting for them to snap.

ride fine though, hold tension, look nice and haven't failed yet (!)
