Evening all - quick question for all those with 2012 shimano xt brakes ...I have searched for my specific issue but not many posts about. Recently fitted a pair of xt brakes, one bought in uk from lbs, other bought from ze Germans. Both work fine and are powerful but just been out to top up resevoir a little now they have bed in and after screwing in the bleed screw and pumping lever, I could hear some air and see small bubbles pop of oil squishing out between top cap and main lever body. Could I have overfilled lever? Could this just be the extra oil venting out through some kind of relief valve? There does seem to be a notch/holeon one side of the cover to main body interface but it's seems to be leaking the other side of this.

I just hope it's not a problem with the seals! Thing in both my brakes do it bought from different suppliers and my mate who also recently fitted xt's has exactly the same thing. Chances of all 4 being faulty I hope are very low!

Anyone else seen this with their brakes?

Hi - yeah they work fine 🙂 just seemed to happen after I put a bit more oil in resevoir. I did not think the resevoir is pressurised anyway (???), when pulling level you can see oil rise and fall in the bleed screw port (assuming piston displacing fluid). Just weird that 4 very new xt brake levers all bought from different suppliers have this issue.

If you put your ear close to lever you can Hear oil "squishing" through what I presume is the top cap diaphram seal.

wierd, i just replaced my 2010 lever with a 2012 one so had to re bleed the system, and used the funnel thingy, no squishing to be heard im afraid, but tbh if it works then i wouldnt be worrying too much.

Had the same issue when bleeding a friends XTs.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that it is normal for some oil to escape from around the topcap after bleeding, I just can't remember where I read it.

After all the problems my mates have had with their Hope brakes ....no thanks!

Just out of interest for those with xt's, do you too up the resevoir all the way to the top of the threaded fill port?

The only way you can fill the reservoir to correct level is to do a proper fill and bleed by pushing fluid from caliper to lever using syringe and funnel. However, if yours is working okay I would just carry on riding as normal. Excess fluid will eventually settle at the correct level.
