As above, my two boys have had their use out of a Beinn 26, so now it's off to cascade down through three cousins. Before it goes, I'll need to do it up. Chain and cassette at bare minimum, probably the proprietary chainset/ring, and whilst the gears still work they are bashed to hell, screen smashed off the shifter. I would like no.1 cousin to feel new bike joy, not that he's been presented with a rusty bucket of bolts.
Is there anything to choose from between Acera and X4 8sp? Durability is clearly a key consideration.
Cheers
The sram looks cooler with it's skeletal cage, though I think it will be flimsier.
Shimano every time, much lighter shifter action, far more reliable, spares are easier to obtain from any LBS, and less likely to fall apart (i've seen X4 shifter windows pop out when stressing cables during a build, and rear mechs are a bit fragile too).
Do you have any 9-speed stuff in your shed you could donate?
Just swapped my son from old 9 speed deore shifters to my old Sram x9 and he is much happier with the shifting action.
Would Deore 10sp work?
I think the freehub is the normal width so should be ok. I'm just wondering whether it would work with the proprietory chainring/set.
Does anyone have any experience of attempting this?
I thought 7-9 sp free hubs were slightly narrower (this may be wrong) as I remember something about needing a spacer.
#1 has 8sp Shimano on her Trek and the shift action is lighter than the 9sp X.9 I had on my MTB a while back.
Acera is good, I have the 9sp shifters on my commuter and like them. Sram X5 is basically the old Rocket shifters which, if they are the same as they used to be, were pretty decent. Can't comment on the mech as I have the Shimano compatible version.
I would find it difficult to believe the crankset is totally proprietary.
