Is this what a creaky CSU sounds like?

Does this sound like a CSU issue? And if so, how can I determine if it's a stanchion/crown or steerer/crown interface?

Mezzer Pro, <6mths 500km use but no warranty. Already cleaned and checked headset/bar/stem interface and swapped fork from one bike to another, and noise follows the fork. I've read about the process being to remove and reinsert the legs or steerer into the crown, but unsure where/who in the UK can do this and is recommended?

Thanks.

RSF Suspension does steerer and stanchion replacements. Might be worth getting in touch with Dave there.

Yep that's the CSU. It normally happens for me on the brake side first.

Only option on the Mezzer is a new CSU.

The stanchions can't be pressed out due to the uneven crown shape. (unless you can find someone who will machine a pressing block that fits)

JTech deal with Manitou warranty work now for us UK folks.

Maybe get in touch with them see if they can help.

They warrantied a CSU for me but I was the original owner and had a receipt.

Either way they can get you a new CSU.

Thought/hoping you'd appear on this topic @singlespeedstu with your creaky history 😀

I can't tell if this is the steerer/crown or stanchions/crown interface. I know J-Tech (and others - thanks @orena45) offer replacement ND steerers but I won't do that* unless I knew for sure where the issue is exactly.

* if it's even possible on a Mezzer, or does the crown shaping also prevent steerer replacement? Edit: ah, I've just understood what you meant about the crown shaping, it's the crown surface facing downwards/stanchions that's not even. So wouldn't affect pressing a steerer out/in

Planning to drizzle some 638 or 648 into the joints as first option.

Thanks for info re J-Tech and warranty handling. I knew Ison were new dealing with importing etc but didn't know about the warranty side. No warranty for these - bought new-but-spares-old-stock from same seller as my Tallboy end of last year (which has its own creak-free Mezzers). New CSU won't be cheap I expect!

Remove the fork from the bike.

Use a vice to secure the steerer.*

Pull up/ push down on a single leg.

See if just one side creaks, if it does it's that side. If it does it on both sides it could be all three points it's creaking from.

*I slide a bit of PVC pipe over the steerer and clamp that underneath the jaws of the vice so i don't damage the steerer.

To be sure, you could strip the forks down to the CSU. Steerer in the vice and try the same test.
I had some Mattocs do the same and and a video like you’ve done, but CSU only was enough to get the warranty ball rolling. That was through Chain Reaction though, so a while back. Long enough ago the replacement CSU coating is starting to show wear.

Can't find a price on Ison site but this gives an indication of cost for a new CSU.

That's not unreasonable compared to the cost of a ND steerer replacement at £170ish fitted. Better with a new complete CSU to address all 3 possible sources rather than just the 1 possible creaky joint (steerer).

Better with a new complete CSU

And presumably a two year warranty as it's a new part.

Just bought a complete CSU (stripped for parts from J-Tech) for an X-Fusion Sweep HLR Roughcut. I'm hoping the bushings aren't knackered and the new CSU fits the bushings without needing resizing/replacing. Could be wishful thinking we'll see!
