Deore 11sp, lent my HT to a mate, he had a little off in the lakes and now I can't get the shifting just right. Mech hanger looks fine, but replaced anyway, just want to know if I should bend this straight before I put it back together.
I don’t know about that mech, but my xtr 12 speed is not straight on purpose. What I can say for certain is that a straight mech hanger doesn’t guarantee a straight mech, brand new undamaged bikes can be out.
Brand new, undamaged bikes are about 30-40% likely to be bent enough that 11/12 speed stuff won't work properly.
+1 on 12sp mechs being designed with a bend.
i’ve just checked an 11sp grx mech, it has a bend exactly like the image above. It was working perfectly, only removed as i fitted 12sp di2.
so I’m guessing the cage is actually fine, your problem lies elsewhere.
Just to be clear, it was working perfectly before he crashed it.
Any visual damage to the rest of the mech?
cable ok?
I know you’ve replaced the hanger, but that’s no guarantee it’s 100% straight
shifter ok?
It's worth checking your new hanger is straight, if you can beg borrow or buy the tool.
IIRC the new Shimano mechs have a slight dog leg so that the lower jockey wheel/cage is a bit further from the wheel/spokes. The top jockey wheel should be perfectly aligned with the chain/cassette.
Depends which model Deore it is, the Deore RD- M5120 10/11sp is straight, don't know about the other 11sp, I thought the bent cages were a 12sp thing, YouTube might have videos of your mech, there's a few about the 12sp ones being bent by design, if it's for 51t cassette it should probably be bent
I'm just guessing here but I would have thought that both jockey wheels should be in alignment with each other. It doesn't look the case in the above picture so I would be tempted to bend it back a bit.
Looks bent to me. Lower jockey wheel is out of alignment, surely?
I can't see how you'd bend steel without some serious marks on one side of the cage, plus that's bent outwards, so the impact would have to have come through the spokes....

I'd agree with that.
Easier to tell when it's on the bike by looking down the chainline
plus that’s bent outwards, so the impact would have to have come through the spokes….
Yeah that makes sense, but look at the jockey wheel, does that look right to you? From the angle in the photo, I agree with @aide, it just "looks wrong"
Bottom jockey wheel looks bent out and twisted round a little.
11 speed Shimano mech's should be straight. As above it's the 12speed that's got the twist in it from new.
Just straighten it out, they're pretty easy to bend.
I recently replaced the cage on an XT 11 speed after a chunky, helmet ending crash. I could get the shifting right, except for the two smallest cogs. Eventually replaced the UDH and when compared to the original it was exactly 1mm off at the furthest point from the axle. Bloody annoying, but at least it can be kept as a spare.

Or the force was exerted through the chain
