My knowledge of bike mechanics is incredibly poor, I can do stuff on the go (chain link, tube replacement) but anything beyond that and i'm stumped!!

It's the bit that joins the rear cogs to the rear hub. Shimano uses the same one across ten and eleven speed, sram has a different version for some of their eleven speed cassettes but not all. If you're using a Shimano cassette you don't need to worry about it

As you can tell, I buy bikes, ride them and then take them to the shop to get fixed if they break or need servicing. This is really the first time i've decided to swap anything up.

So the last number is the crank arm length. If you dont have a preference I'd just check the current cranks on the bike they'll say what length they are somewhere.

The first number is the front chainring size (number of teeth), depends how fit you are and what kind of terrain you'll be riding.

Same for the middle numbers 11 is the number of teeth on the smallest cog of the cassette and 40 or 42 is the biggest cog. Bigger cog equals lower gear.

Essentially these combinations allow you to run the same top and bottom ends of a triple chainset. There are gear ratio calculators on the internet if you want to get super nerdy.

I don't know. Someone will be along soon to inform us.

I just know that Sram use the XD freehub to allow the smaller (10 tooth) high gear, whereas shimano use an 11 tooth high gear and then "float" the lowest gear in towards the spokes on a spider thus using a standard 8/9/10spd shimano freehub.

Sounds good! You'll probably need some tools etc to fit it all once it arrives. Everyone on here will be happy to talk you through the process of fitting the parts etc. Also there are some good videos about on youtube etc. Al Vines' ones for MBR or MBUK (cant remember) are pretty good if he's done one on fitting cranks etc.

Do you get shifter, a mech and chain as well?

Yes. Use split links, only pop the chain to shorten it.

Personally, I would get cranks that gave me the option of going below 32T, but that's a personal thing.
There are some aftermarket 30t rings that fit those cranks I suppose.

Unless you are particularly tall, I would also consider 170mm cranks if you have the choice. Fewer rock strikes on a full sus.

The XT cassette comes in an 11-46t flavour. Worth a look. For some extra range.
