no pics though i could do if required

just looking at my dad's "winter bike" and it's in pretty rough nick! the main issue to me being the headset - a LOT of movement, like maybe 4-5mm

it's an old alu road frame (edin bike coop) and i imagine fitting a new headset would be pretty tricky given its condition (i.e. everything will be welded in there solid)

obviously not right, but is it actually dangerous to run a headset like that? braking and control under braking would be affected i suppose..

basically he wouldn't scrap it this winter unless i persuaded him it was actually dangerous to ride.

ta!

Fitting headsets is very easy if you have the right tools...

It probably just needs a dolop of grease and some adjusting.

Save the old guys bike, he does not want any modern nonsense, in his mind nothing in the world can better than his bike, because it was the best in his world when he stopped buying cycling weakly or whatever.... but yes as it is it is dangerous.

Rode a bike with a massively flared head tube for years as a student. Never felt dangerous, never made me crash or anything. Just accepted that the frame needed to go in the bin, which it did as soon as I could afford another one...

Is that movement of the cups in the headtube, or movement of the steerer in the headset?

sounds good but he just started using it after a summer on the spesh tarmac so.. 😉

i'm guessing it would be very corroded in there, given the state of the rest of the frame, that's why i was thinking it would be tricky to replace..
