don't really have a clue but this unit seems ok from reviews and youtube videos.

If it has the OS maps then it's the one you want.

You can use free open source mapping effectively offroad IME, so no need to pay extra for OS mappng.

Google and there is lots of info out there.

I'd recommend taking time to familiarise yourself with the Garmin functions before heading out into the wild - it is hardly intuitive.

I also like to have the paper OS map with me, it's much easier to locate yourself with that than the low-res Garmin screen if you do wander off route.

a gps wont make you a good map reader, practice first

I'm with chakaping on this, personally I wouldn't rely on a gps unit alone, though mainly for the reason that the batteries always* fail when you realise you're lost or similar.

@chakaping - you mean if I just get the garmin 810 base model like this

then I just upload a freesource map and it's as effective as models that came with OS map?

@pawsy-bear - yah planning to buy one hopefully next week and practice in my local off piste routes ... in time to get familiarize with the unit by summer...oh summer 8)

..and yah will always have a back-up plan.. paper map and riders mate phone gps apps.

Yes, the open source maps are very good IME. They got us through a welsh coast to coast as well as numerous peaks, lakes, Malverns, long Mynd etc rides.

OSM is fine as long as you stick to relatively popular trails. Get properly off the beaten track and it's hard to beat OS mapping. It's got me out of trouble a few times when the trail I'd planned to follow disappeared.

I find having Garmin on the bars for routes & recording and Back country navigator for larger area hi-res POV on a large smartphone a great combo.

Oh, and OS map cards for £20 on ioffer.com so I'd just get the unit or hrm pack and get maps from I offer.

A paper map and the 'grid point GB' ap is a lot cheaper.

The ap will give you a 10figyee grid reference to help you confirm your location.

Good for you on practice. Maybe try orienteering that will help a lot. Plus plenty of people to give you training. OS maps are best and you get the whole of UK on one card at 50k. I don't take paper maps But do carry spare battery.

I find that the free basecamp software for planning routes is great. It will use the mapping from your garmin so you get all the detail you need. Ideal for using others gpx to locate the good single track. ??

There's a nice feature where the 810 pairs wiv your phone and give live updates to where you are on a map....Ive used this when unsure how long I'm going to be and want a pickup from Mrs DoD 🙂

I have used a 800 and no paper map in the UK, Spain and France for years. Unfortunately for my misses I always find my way home.

You'll be fine - until the batteries fail, then you'll probably die.

Ask someone who guides natural trails rather than STW ie a professional - try one of the guiding companies in the Lakes, North Wales or Scotland.
I suspect they'll steer you towards learning how to read a map and compass. Judging weather and wind and being able to match map with terrain are other essential skills.
Worth also asking mountain rescue what they recommend - they'll have plenty of experience carrying people off the hill and I'm sure they'll have a view on reliance on GPS...
Re Brecon in particular - ask yourself why the British Army and Special Forces use it for training if it's a benign environment

A nice wee addition to your armoury is some nice, cheap OS mapping. Download viewranger and you can buy all the England and Wales national parks which includes lakes, peaks and beacons for 2.99 all in. Bargain in my book.

If you have an Android Phone you can download every square inch of the UK in all scales for £7 with Back country navigator. iPhone equivalent UKMap was a fiver. BCN does nav and recording while UKmap is just the maps.

As a comparison to the just use a phone....

My 810 sits on the bars in all weathers.
I've crashed onto it several times.
The battery lasts a good 8hrs with the screen on and GPS bouncing away
The maps are good and the route follow is very good

Are these actually legit? Looks like a clever pirate copy ie no payment to the OS for the maps.
