I have always wanted one, they are the best looking dh bike ever and one has come up for sale near me! Is there any reason not to?

It seems like spares can still be go so that's good, right?

I think the back end can get a bit sloppy.

I had one for a bit and really liked how it rode...
[img] [/img]

Complicated series of events meant I didn't have it too long, but that wasn't the bike's fault.

They snapped in the back end? All the ones I've seen have been welded.

Stick a -2degree angleset in them and they are'nt too far of 'modern' dh geometry.Pivot hardwear can be sourced from betd but if the lower link has worn there will always be play no matter what you do and people sell nos links for £200!!!
Other than being a bit heavy they are bomb proof!(edit-apart from his mate \/)
Good article here

I will go and see it over the weekend but I am very keen if only for the fact I have always wanted one as I would like to be Sam Hill!

Good info on the back end, I did read somewhere about that. Snapping is not something I was aware of but I think that my limited DH skills shouldn't rouble it too much! Any more pics of your Sundays would be great!

They are a great bike.

The early ones had some issues with linkage wear, causing a sloppy back end, the linkage design got a revision to make it more reliable.

I'd make sure it was an 07 onwards, as the bearing & linkage design is better.

They are a pretty bomb proof bike - there were very little issues with them from cracking, considering the numbers of them at one point. I rode/raced one for years. It was probably the best DH bike I ever owned 🙂

If you buy one that's had a bit of use, I'd expect it to have cracked already if it was going to?

Mine after stripping to sell...[img] [/img]

I did feel a tiny bit like Sam Hill on one or two corners. It did corner very well.

Must have been a very bad batch that made it to tassie then....
Everyone seemed to have one, going rate was about 400 quid built (there is probably one for sale now if you can afford the postage)

The one I am off to see is a later model in the black and green colour. The article on sicklines was really good and its made me keener.

Its only ever going to be wheeled out 5-6 times a year for uplifts but I don't care!

This is mine:

I bought it as Im going to whistler this year and want a DH bike for the park. Have not ridden it nearly enough yet though! My only concern is spares if something breaks while im out there.

I've got a spare North Shore Billet mech hanger for a Sunday somewhere if anyone needs it. Loved mine when I had it.

I have one and still ride it to this day from new. I've considered changing it, but I would miss it too much. I put a -2degree angleset in it and it feels incredibly stable at high speeds yet still turns very well.

The best model was the 2008 model, and the 'factory' frame was manufactured in the USA, the other frames, 'team' and 'expert' and 'world cup' were manufactured in the far east.

Check the status of the shock and be aware some shocks don't fit it. I added a titanium spring to my dhx5 and the extra width of the spring only just clears the frame.

There is a very good thread on ridemonkey which gives all the information you need about the Sunday. It was good enough for Sam Hill...

If you buy it you wont regret it and its got to be the most value for money second hand bike out there.

Probably better to see past the article and just buy a frame/bike that hasn't a history of snapping - plus they're 6-7 y/o, so will be 'tired'.

if you're wavering at all just watch the whole of Earthed 5 or Hill's run in val di sole in '08 😯

Most dh have a history of snapping at some point or other. My 224 was supposed to.fall to pieces just by looking at it. It never did.

*Owning the bike may not allow you to replicate the performance of Sam Hill, the frame offers less warranty on this than snapping.....

I thought I wanted an Iron Horse Sunday.

They were a massively popular bike that made a big impact at the time. Helped by a few spectacular world cup performances. For that they will be fondly remembered.

It's a bit like a classic car. Something that gets elevated above everything else because of the buzz that surrounded it at the time. When in fact a new Golf GTi would run rings around E-Type Jag or something.

There will be loads of newer, more readily available bikes that will be just as good or much better than a shonky old Sunday with a wobbly rear triangle.

Check out alloy V10's. Out of fashion with those who like plastic and big wheels but seriously one of the fastest, lightest most durable bikes out there.

The thing is is that this bike fulfils several criteria
1. Its in budget
2. Its the right size
3. Its local.
4. Its a proper dh bike

If I had a bigger budget I reckon a demo 8 or glory would be just the thing. However my budget is set and I'm sticking to it!
The fact that it's a bike I have always wanted and its decently specced is a.big bonus! I am still keeping my eyes open for a demo, glory, trek session etc but the bargains are few and far between!

Would you be looking to get the price down £100 or £150?

You'll want to budget to get the shock serviced I reckon. Mine felt OK to start but quickly lost its compression damping.

And check the pivots over for play carefully, I had to replace one of them right away on mine.

FWIW I felt it was probably as capable as my old Session (2008ish) and a bit more involving to ride. The Summum I had after was in a different league, but much more of a very fast plough that just tore through everything.

The sunday may have sold! I have seen a few Demo's around which look promising, I like the look of both the demo 7 + 8. However there are hundreds of big hits for sale ( the newer ones not the old mismatched wheel ones). Would the Bighit be ok with triple clamp 8" forks on? I know the Bighit isn#t strictly a DH bike but it may be DH enough for me.....maybe. Anyone ever had one?

The last version of the Big Hit (7in freeridey kind of bike) or the one in between that and the mismatched wheels version?

Funny enough I also owned the latter for a while. I would hang on for another Sunday or something else a bit more modern TBH!

I have seen the 2010-11 model on ebay for decent money. The good thing is that they seem to come up quite regularly. I am just weighing up options and keep everything as near to 700-750 as possible! I am sure it can be done!

If it was me id go for a sunday-the bike was ahead of its time! With somesore of angleset installed it would be far of alot of modern bike geometry

Ive my old white 06 factory frame for sale-BB and saint cranks included.

Needs TLC but potentially a cracker bike on a budget! let me know if your interested.

I bought and installed the updated F7 linkage-i have the original red linkage and bits which i will include in sale along with spare axle. The red linkage is still 100% too.

The DHX 5 shock that comes with it could do with a service and the dropout threads have previously been repaired due to a set of heavy hands over tightening. I removed the iscg tab as i previously had one snap off whilst using an lg1 chain device-i now use an iscg adaptor behind the BB.

They're still a good option. As said above, BETD can source some of the parts and the 1.5 head tube offers up all sorts of head angle options ( -0 to -2). And to be honest I think that modern super long slack DH bikes struggle to be fun on less steep tracks.

Do a bit of research on which shock to fit as I have a vague feeling that they didn't work well with the standard Fox DHX. I've ridden one a few times and they're great.

Alternatives are an old generation Glory, they were bombproof and rode really well. And in my opinion they had better geo that the newer Glory up until recently. The certainly were less twitchy (prob due to the higher weight)

Its not definite that the sunday has sold just yet so all hope is not lost.

My budget is 750 max. Ideally a proper DH bike (no stinkies or FR bikes)and not an orange 22X as had a 224 previously. Nothing wrong with it I just want something different!
Medium or maybe small. Full build prefereably as 750 on bits may not go that far!
What would you look at (excluding a sunday)?

I went through the exact same thing!!
Older V10s (1-1/8th ht) are steep and high.
Giant Glory's are'nt bad especially if you are ickle (Large is waay to small for me).
Morewood Makulus pop up cheap on pinkbike from time to time.
If you'd asked before christmas you could have had this for a little bit more more 😐

I like the glorys but they are very small (on paper). Is that a lapierre DH720? It looks great!

There are a few interesting options on pinkbike but at my budget there is not a wealth of choice. What did you go for in the end?

I am trying to be sensible and not spending 1K on a bike that will not get a massive amount of use.....but its hard as DH bikes look so good!

Great clip.
What's amazing, is just how steady and relaxed his body is. Hardly any visible technique. How!?

Watch it again.
Jonesey stops him half way down laughing uncontrollably. In an interview he says he was a half a bike length behind Hill and in 10 metres of trail Hill was 4 bike lengths in front. But Jonesey did'nt brake and Hill did'nt pedal!!He just could'nt fathom what he'd just seen.
That and Hill was 4 seconds quicker (the 1.04 was a practice track of Jonesey's and he invited a load of Pros-Hill,Minaar,Gee,Peaty etc- to ride it than anyone and spotted lines no one had ever seen before.

I wouldn't touch a Commencal with a barge pole. The most crack prone frames ever made.

These things are amazing for the money;

A few years ago when I had a mate in the trade I got to see a Commencal graveyard. A shed piled high with broken frames all under 18 months old. I think they're over the worst of it now but it's a brave (or uninformed) man that buys a used one.

The Specialized Status is an awesome bike, I just used that one as an example. People think of it as a beginner bike but that's only because it plays second fiddle to the demo and comes with a basic spec.

It's a legitimate 8 inch travel, FSR, downhill frame. Plenty of used ones available. If I needed a budget DH bike it would be top of my list. Try and get one with Boxxers though.

I'd have this one no arguments.

OP, just out of interest, if I sold you my white, medium, 2008 Sunday Team frame, with a -2 degree cup, ((the shock was serviced recently (receipt to prove this) and is specifically tuned to the Sunday, ie very low compression damping)), how much would you be willing to pay? As said before im the original owner.

I would want the small sunday frame sorry. I won't look to pay over 300 for a frame in this instance, ideally 250.
