Can anyone recommend a decent shop in London which actually likes mountain bikes? Have been trying to get some help for a month now and most shops just can't be bothered as soon as I mention mountain bike, and those that do seem helpful are just doing it to try to sell me things I don't need.

I realise that the market here is more road/commuter but surely there must be someone who knows things about bikes with wider tyres....

What are you trying to buy/get help with?

Brixton Cycles don't carry a lot of MTB stock but can order anything in and have some keen MTBers on the staff and best mechanics in the business. Workers Co-operative so not just staffed by students.

Greg at Moose Cycles in Tooting is still an mountain specialist.

In Central London Evans Waterloo and Great Portland Street store had a fair bit of MTB stock last I remember.

Not so familiar with North London these days. Mosquito in Islington *used* to do a lot of MTB but website doesn't point that way now.

Cycle Surgery at Strype Street (Spitalfields) always have a good range of MTB stuff, including clothing, parts and complete bikes or frames.

Having issues with old avid brakes and really want to try fixing them rather than replacing (seems a bit wasteful and I'm broke!). Was thinking of trying brixton actually. Moose look hopeful from their site too. Is good to know there is some love in the capital!

You're other option is to leave the bike at an out of town specialist after a ride and pick it up the week after and go for another ride.

I was stunned by the MTB range in Evans Cycles in Canary Wharf a few years ago, and by the knowledge and passion of the staff. Really nice surprise during an especially hardcore week at work.

Is currently unrideable with my brake issues. Pistons have seized up on front brake and bleeding hasn't helped so going to try stripping it down... Also seals have broken down. I know I can get parts online but kinda old school in that I like chatting to people face to face for advice....

Plus maybe I should just replace the brake instead of all this faffing...

Hmmmm, seems I should also stop avoiding the larger chains...! Guess part of it is luck too, depends who serves you.

+1 vertical climber

The Avid service kits aren't cheap - £20ish for lever and £10 for caliper (if you can still get one for older models). So by the time you have added in labour, you could have got a new set.

Cycle Surgery in West Hampstead, literally next door to Kilburn. They are helpful and have a range of MTBs in stock.
