On a day when the Guardian seems a bit anti-bike:
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/stop-demonising-cyclists/
Not sure if its a tongue in cheek joke piece or serious. However his opening statements regarding theft is the main (or even only) barrier to me personally for using a bike for utility at all.
Until that is sorted it remains a strictly leisure pursuit for me.
“Cyclists really are vile”
I'm actually really glad to see that there
It nicely directs libertarian, anti-beauracracy, small-government ideology at the proposals cyclists should have insurance and number plates, to highlight both the absurdity of the propositions and the hypocracy of many that suggest them
What a remarkable piece of pro-cycling writing. I kept expecting it to turn but it didn't. How odd.
It's left me quite confused.
Wow
Ill bet the usual spectator readers will have a fit!
Whilst it is generally more right wing than the majority on here, the spectator has a fairly broad editorial stance. That means there are certainly plenty of frothing at the mouth articles, but a decent number of thoughtfully argued ones.
If you want to dip your toe into understanding the thinking behind right wing views (and if you want to change the minds that hold them you really need to) it’s a decent place to start.
Boris use to be editor? For all his faults he was very pro cycling
As above I love the ridiculing of the libertarians who want more roles for cyclists
Spectator readers are going to be so confused...
On the one hand, all cyclists are red-light-jumping bastards... obviously. but on the other they're now apparently tax-avoiding, libertarian freedom fighters who are sticking two fingers up at 'big government'
Their poor little heads are going to explode trying to process that! 😂
I think some of you have confused spectator readers with mail/express readers.
