Hello,

I saw a post a while ago saying that the inbred 26 and 29 might be coming back. Since then I have not heard anything. The second hand market seems to be ridiculous at the moment, with battered frames going for over £100. I am looking for a 29 frame and they are very scarce.

Personally I feel O-O have lost their way but thats neither here nor their.

Thanks, Henry.

I’ve just bought a second hand slot dropout, vee brake only, 853, Inbred. It’s to replace a DN6 model now Boy1 has become extra lanky.

It rides superb, proper old school, zingy, skinny tubed steel.

The DN6 16” frame and forks will be for sale once it’s cleaned up. I was hoping to get £50 for it, but selling a few bits on eBay recently the prices for cycling stuff has gone mental.

The Wife is nagging me to clear the spares pile out. I’m resisting so far.

Isn't the Bootzipper pretty much the same idea as an inbred? Not particularly cheap though, and has a load of new standards so less ideal for a parts bin build.

I'd be looking at a Bootzipper for rigid or a Big Dog hardtail from the current On One lineup.

I bought a Big Dog frame when they were on sale a month ago and am really enjoying it so far.

Expect planet x to be pricing frames again at realistic prices in July when the next container load sails in.

If it it come back it wouldn't be the same frame. I'd expect it to be built round a 29er 120mm fork with short stem geometry.

I’d expect it to be built round a 29er 120mm fork with short stem geometry.

Taken from the Planet X description for the Big Dog I mentioned above...

"Designed for 120-130mm suspension, but works ok with 490-500mm rigid forks.
Intended to be used with a 35-50mm stem (if using riser bars) - other bars may need a longer stem."

Frame details here

It's a bit too burly for me. I'd want 120 max and some form of lockout for hill climbing. I have a 3 mile climb straight out of my door, 2 miles of it on Hergest Ridge. I guess the only way of getting a lighter steel bike is to pay a lot more, but I'm clueless as to the out of the saddle pedaling qualities of modern forks. I want a steel bike that's quick uphill and reasonably confident down it.

Depend how realistic you want to be.

A Medium big dog weighs 2.7kg
An XL Solaris weighs 2.6kg

That's the only sizes I could find quoted, but it's not a massive difference. Anything not-carbon, with 29" wheels involves quite a lot of metal.

I bought my Big Dog as a frame and headset bundle. My size small weighs 2.8KGs, so it's a bit heavier than quoted but not massively so.

I originally built it up with 120mm Rockshox Recon RLs and used the lockout on the roads, as it's 4 miles up hill to my local trails but it doesn't feel like too much of a slog. I've built it up with a lightish wheelset using Superstar hubs and RaceFace Ar24 24mm internal rims which probably helps it feel spritely. I'm currently running 2.25" Maxxis Ardents and it feels fast on and off road. I did run some Continental Trail King 2.4" briefly and although they added loads of grip and a bit of squish they did dull the ride somewhat.

The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't ride like a heavy bike, even though my build is fairly heavy, and component choice will also effect how it rides and what it weighs. If weight is your main concern it might not be the frame for you, but I'm not sure you'll find a steel frame that's significantly lighter for similar money. Lighter wheels and tyres would make more difference than frame weight IMHO.

I'd actually like a slightly modernized Inbred, like bootzipper but singlespeed (and will have to wait for the next sale or pre-order as £499 is a bit much for something to hang the parts bin off).

It's all planet-X's fault, I only started this thought process as I was planning to upgrade the fulcrum wheels on my scandal and they won't fit anything else in the shed!

^^ +1
Something that will run a 26+ wheelset and 27.5 with more modern geometry.

I still have size 18 inbred which I've dragged out the garage since the lockdown. Compared to my fullsuss it feels light & sprightly. But I hate the geometry of it now. It feels tall and short, in fact if the saddle is dropped and I go to sit, I completely miss it ecuase it's too far forward.

Well I've ordered a Dog but I've no idea what the fork will be as no fork was mentioned on the spec sheet. I have a set of new Recons on my Inbred but they are not much cop on pot holes let alone rough offroad at speed. They suit the Inbred well though. If I get Judys I might buy 120mm 51 offset 2021 Yaris. What forks are folks running?

If you want light then Yari bit heavy as the way to go. Try and get some Rebas instead, Yari is like a baby Lyrik so not really ideal for light hardtail 120mm build.

Well the Yari is 300 grams less than the 35; and 400 grams more than the Reba. Its pretty much the same weight as the Judy.....

Im loving my 35's still on the Scandal, the weight really hasnt been noticeable.

Although Im sure Id probably notice if I rode one with some SIDs. 1600g and 35mm stanchions, best of all worlds, and 'only' €500 on r2 bike. If i wasnt jobless that would be tempting.

Think those Sids are 32s; and they have the weight of the 120 Yaris as 2.2, but then they have 150 Yaris as lighter......

I've got a 14" inbred in black I need to think about shifting, bought new in 2015 for the GF, built up and ridden about 10 times in total

Cloggy - Jeremy?

I've a Scandal I've just finished building, virtually the same geo as a SolarisMAX, I've gone for a light(ish) build with 120mm fork, you're welcome to try it if you wanted, I mostly ride over the ridge too, that's what I built it for.

You have the better of me. Small World..... The only thing I'm dithering about is 120 or 130. I've ordered 175 cranks as even up Hergest I only use the big ring on my Inbred. Now I'm wondering if I'll get peddle strike with less travel... E me through my website to meet up. Thanks very much for the offer.

@Rocketdog. I'll have dibs on that frame please, my diddy Mrs needs a new one to replace her 2006 white one!
