I'm needing new summer SPD shoes.

I've had M081, M086 and now M089's... They've all been comfy (if a tad narrow), pedal really well and durable.

They are used to commute on road, on road bike tour and mountain bike. I don't like soles that are too flexible.

Suggestions of alternatives - maybe one of the Shimano or Pearl Izumi touring shoes?

Specialized Recon 1.0

Look like Shimano but are far more comfy.
I get foot ache in Shimano but not the Specialized ones.

Shimano are OK for the first few hours, but my feet ache after that.

I have the Shimano shoes too - but the Specializeds are my go-too.

I have M089s, and they're comfortable and durable. For the last couple of years have been using some GIRO adjustable insoles which have eliminated some discomfort when upping my mileage.
They are not the foxiest shoe tho TBH, they just do the ob very well

I have some old Shimano M161s that are getting pretty tired now. They’ve been great, very comfortable and really rugged, if a little heavy.

I’ve always got on well with Specialized road shoes, replaced some nearly 20 year old ones with a pair of Torch 3.0 (on sale) which are lovely. Also have some 15 year old Defrosters still going strong. I think that a pair of Recons might be next on my list, only thing now is I’m about to finally pull the trigger on a gravel bike so need to make sure my next shoes are appropriate 🙂

I really liked the M089 but couldn't get replacements when the sole of one of mine disintegrated. Ending up getting a pair of Shimano XC5 and they have been excellent. More comfortable than the M089s in my experience and they are lasting well.

If you're finding Shimano too narrow, then I'd recommend Scott, they're a little bit wider-fitting and I don't need to size-up (unlike with Shimano).
