I'm about to put a half decent 26' hardtail and a FS 29 frame on ebay - but now thinking its probably the wrong time as winter is on its way. Is this really a thing or do they sell regardless?
Purely my opinion, but those 2 bikes should be good - a cheap but good quality (assuming, based on the wheelsize) hardtail would make a good winter bike; and frame only is good for someone who will spend their winter building from second hand parts.
Offloading a 1 year old top of the line race ready (any discipline) wonder machine; not so good
Do people stop riding in the winter?
@trailwagger I do, it's usually minus 15c here and covered in snow.
Personally I think now is the best time to buy 2nd hand stuff, especially from pro riders and sponsored people etc.
It is easier to sell early summer, yes lots of people stop riding in winter and also you're competing with sale bargains this time of year.
Yet here I am about to sell two bikes as well - anyone fancy a Solaris or a Smuggler then?
Quite simply, the worst time to sell and the best time to buy.....
But will being another year old (I know its six months till spring, but its a new year so will appear a year older in an ad) equal the slight hit you may take by selling in Autumn.
Try to sell a bike in the autumn at too high a price, it doesn't sell, tell everyone that it's a rubbish time of year for selling bikes.
Get desperate, sell bike in springtime for it's realistic value, tell everyone that it was cheap because it was another year older.
I don't think it really makes much of a difference, I think a lot of people keep the bike they've ridden all summer with the good intention of riding it all winter as well even if they don't. If anything people sell their bikes when they want a new one, which is more likely to be early summer. I've not noticed a huge surge in bikes for sale in the last month.

I'm not convinced there's ever a good time to sell 26" bikes (except maybe 5 years ago), some like DH bikes might have some residual value, but at the XC/trail end of the market you see the carbon and titanium 'superbikes' of yesteryear selling for <£500.

Yep, this.... Its a nice Cotic Soul with pretty new revelations and recently replaced drive chain (this is NOT a stealth ad) and i'm going to hate to part with it for less than £500. But I know thats whats going to happen. But on the other hand i can't justify it sitting in the shed not being ridden either.
anyone fancy a Solaris
Mayyyyybe.
February will be a "more rubbish time"...
... and great, great buying time!
Quite simply, the worst time to sell and the best time to buy…..
This. I've been on both sides, picking up parts for peanuts, and getting zero reponse to selling parts in the autumn that then cause a bidding war when I try to offload them again in the spring.
I had no problem selling a road bike in bits recently and got more money than I thought. 9sp with calliper brakes so “old” tech. Full bikes on eBay went for £250 ish but I sold everything bar the wheels (which i am keeping for my wife’s bike) for £350. Wheels could have sold for £100 ish (Ultegra on open pro).
People always want parts all year round but full bikes are sometimes a struggle to sell anyway even at the best time of the year.
From now until spring is the worst time yes. I buy and sell quite a lot of bike stuff and I try to only buy in winter and sell in spring / summer.
I'm after an XC bike for the 'puffer so wotcha got 😀
I've got a Niner Air9 RDO frame, Specialized Crux (canti) and Specialized Langster I keep meaning to sell. All large if anyone wants to make an offer.
Whenever I try and sell it is always a bad time!
Currently trying to move on a Spesh Carve Expert and a ladies Myka Sport.
Personally I believe there’s never a good time to buy or sell. Wait until next year and it’s a year older. Price to sell and accept things are rarely worth what you may believe them to be worth.
I think so!! Anyone after a 2016 XL Smuggler?!?!?! Because it doesn’t seem so! 😂😂
Personally I believe there’s never a good time to buy or sell.
There is absolutely a good time to buy - buy stuff in December and it will definitely go for less than the same item in June. It is also better to have an end time of 19:00 than 11:00 in the morning.
eBay is a good indicator and you will see the price fluctuations when looking at sold listings at different times of day, different days and times of the year.
I've just spent the afternoon stripping down a 26" Santa Cruz Chamelion just need to get some pics and post it up in the classifieds. Only saving the seat and bars. Once that's gone going to do the same with my S Works Enduro.
Don't think there is a good or bad time as long as it's in good condition and priced right
