Suitable for use with a N/ W chaining without a chain-guide or do I need a Shimano jobbie with clutch?
Yes - the SRAM has a roller bearing clutch that creates the same effect as the Shimano
and coincidentally SRAM brought the NW to market first....
Am I supposed to see a 'switch' or lever to flick on or off?
No, it's always on. To remove the wheel there is a pin/push button. Move the mech back and lock it out of place. Runs really well with my Hope Retainer ring.
There's no on off switch with the Type 2. There is a button to lock the cage forward but that's nothing to do with the clutch, though it is a very handy way of removing a wheel or fitting/removing chain & links with less hassle.
Thanks for the answers guys..I trying to ascertain what I'll need for the switch to 1 x 10..is 40t the largest range extender possible with SRAM?
The cage lock button is a handy feature I'll agree.
I'm using the 40t and it's fitting comfortably. I'm sure some will be along shortly with 42t experience.
So basically your choice of front ring, maybe short bolts and an expander ring.
I have an X9 Type 2 medium cage rear mech and am running a Superstar 32 tooth Narrow/Wide and it's been spot on for 2 weeks in the Alps and only dropped the chain once while back pedalling. For the first few days I used a Superstar top guide(didn't believe the narrow/wide hype) as we'll be that kept getting knocked and moving around and causing problems so I took it off an it worked as well as my old chain device. Not tried an expander yet but will probably get a 42 tooth one if I can't ride up hill with 33 by 36
