Bike is 6 months/ ~1000km (of British winter) old, and gears have been slipping on the 11 tooth sprocket.
I just changed the chain (which is worn to .75) and the new chain made it worse. Is that my cassette shafted?
I've never found it very easy to diagnose a worn cassette from looking at it, but that does look very worn on the 11t sprocket. Though even my e-bike done has done nearly 2000 miles on one chain/cassette/front ring, and I live in a sandy area (think grinding paste all winter). Personally I've never given credence to the .75 chain change, by then it too late IME, if you going to rotate chains do it monthly (mileage dependant) or at .5 and re-use it again later
Thanks for the response Z1ppy. I have read the theory of rotating multiple chains, I'll have to be more careful in future and not let the chain wear so far down. Do you think it would be worth just replacing the 11 tooth and hoping that gives a little more longevity to the cassette?
The other thing that might work is adjusting the B screw to ensure you have enough chain wrap.
I tried that already 😀 got it as close as it would go- no luck!
I think you'll be lucky to locate a single 11T sprocket (I may well be wrong..). I'd be tempted to put the old chain back on and check the mech alignment carefully, as it actually slipping round the sprocket or slipping off it?
The old chain is back on now, I set the derailleur up from scratch and the issue is still there.
The only other thing to note is that the mech hanger recently failed where the shimano direct mount attaches. The direct mount pushed through the notch supposed to hold it in place (where a b-screw would normally sit. At the moment it's held in place using friction on the bolt, rather than the notch that would normally help it align. I was careful to align it as close as possible to where it would normally be, but maybe I'm missing something in the function of that notch.
The gears index fine, shifting is crisp and all of the other gears work flawlessly. I also have a derailleur alignment tool, and the hanger is straight.
EDIT It's very difficult to tell whether the chain is slipping round, as I can't replicate the problem on the bike stand.
is it possible that the sprocket is spinning on the freehub, if the splines are worn on either sprocket or freehub ?
The splines are bomb proof.
Don't sjs have sprockets?
To me some teeth, esp on the big cog, look v worn
I've got a spare 11t. Where do you live?
The splines are bomb proof
well, yeah, assuming you've never fitted it with a spacer too many or allowed the lockring to loosen and ****ed up the ends (same with hollowtech cranksets)
I always kill the 11 tooth first on a cassette. My LBS suggested going up to a 36 tooth on the front chainring. Although it stands to reason it’s the first to go with the least number of teeth in engagement. I tried to learn to spin not mash and that has helped. I’d replace the cassette as the others won’t be far behind and maybe go up a couple of teeth at the front.
Is that picture your cassette? If so, that's completely shagged on the large rings, which will mean the chain is also knackered. Putting a new chain on always makes it worse as the pitch of the links is effectively much shorter than the pitch of the sprocket, and with very few teeth/links in contact on 11, it'll skip like mad.
IMHO of course. And once you change the cassette and the chain, you'll probably find the chain ring will slip when you are putting the power down.
I've moved away from routine chain replacement or rotation. I just leave it alone to all wear out at the same rate. Seems to last ages like that, then just change it all at the same time.
11 speed generally needs chain change at 0.5% wear. Once it get to 0.75 it seems too late. Or so much of the theory goes, reliant on an accurate chain checker.
I’ve found 11 speed quite robust- but then I’m running all steel sram gx cassettes. One is 2 years old and the other is about 6 months. Also running steel eagle x sync chainrings.
I’d forgotten about the chain on the oldest cassette and thought I’d left it too late after a year and a halftime change. The chain checker dropped through on the 0.75 but not right through on the 1. Thought I’d try a new chain (X1) and it went straight on with no worries. Happy days!
I’m no expert but that cassette pictured above looks in a bad way.
the 11 - the 6th in and the top 2 are shot. 2-3-4-5 look relitively unused and the 3/4th from the top look like they are starting to go bad.
id say new cassette time.
Ordered a new sunrace cassette! Thanks for all the responses, generosity and wisdom! Hopefully the next one will last longer....
