i have a planet x spitfire ti road bike that is rim braked and was wondering if it would be possible to get disc mounts fitted to it at all (i cannot afford another bike and i do love my spitfire i must say). it would be nice to be able to fit bigger tires than 25mm (i currently have 28mm fitted but cannot remove them without deflating the tires).

if i can what would the rough cost be do you think?

thanks in advance

Is it a rear brake issue? Could you fit wider or longer drop brakes such as the Shimano R650's?

ah my bike has full sram force 11 groupset inc rim brakes. the brakes are fine i must add, i just cannot fit wider tires due to clearance issues.

would like to be able to fit 32-34mm tires  or even some gravel tires (i have 28mm fitted and they are too wide for the brakes).

I would take the brake off and see what size tyres you can fit in.  You may not be able to fit 34c tyres even without the brake because the brake bridge would be in the way.

An adaptor like the above would be the best bet I reckon.  A mount welded on to Ti frame will be at a guess £200?

Yes, first issue is to discover what true the frame has clearance for. It feels a bit doubtful they would have given a rim brakes frame clearances for 35mm tyre.

My (to) road frame is still a rim brake number. The ultegra calipers accommodate 28mm in and out no bother.

It'll start getting expensive though - changing your hubs or wheels, buying calipers. They you'll discover cable or hybrid calipers don't really hold a candle to hydro and you'll want to change your shifters too......

Welding to TI is not straightforward IIRC?  also the seat stay would need bracing with a welded on disc mount.  fork would need to be replaced for the same reason - a disc mount welded on a non disc fork - the non disc fork will not be strong enough for the twisting forces

I’d check that the frame has clearance for a disc brake - a road frame takes a 130mm OLN rear hub whereas a disc frames are typically 135mm QR or 138mm through axle - you can’t really cold-set a titanium frame like a steel one. The second issue may be finding someone prepared to do it - cutting titanium requires special tools and welding it needs the right kit.

i cannot afford another bike

Not even if you sold the titanium one you already own?

By the time you've gone through the cost and rigmarole of having an off the peg Ti frame modified you could have just saved up a bit, flogged the old one and bought something with disc mounts.

Or just carry on riding a bike you already like and stop worrying about discs, they only slow you down 😉

You'll need to get a different frame and fork then

I would see if you can get a PX Hurricane second hand, it is exactly what you're looking for without any bodging.
