Is it mad to cycle from Luton airport to Aylesbury? I live in France and use my bike frequently to work (40k round trip) have lights and all the fluo gear, I just find public transport so slow.
will land in Luton early afternoon in Nov.
thanks adrian

Google maps makes it 28 miles and ~2-1/2 hours via Dunstable, on the road of course... You look to have a couple of options between Dunstable and Aylesbury...

You up for that?

In fact if you can cut your way through direct to Markyate, just south of the A5 you could save some distance and avoid some busier roads perhaps?

I live in Luton and work in Aylesbury and drive every day. It is do-able a lot will depend on the route you decide to take. There are major roadworks at the roundabout at the junction of the A5 and the A505, if using the route via Wing and the A418. The other route would be longer via Slipend, Kensworth, out towards Pitstone/Tring on not so major roads but likely to end up on the A41 into Aylesbury.

I would avoid going straight through Dunstable on A5 as mentioned Re: Roadworks on A5/A505. Though could go into the centre of Dunstable and then headout on the B489...

Looks totally doable.. Not lived in the area for years but a quick glance at Google maps.. I would avoid the a roads and cut across south of dunstable towards Tring on minor roads.

Google Maps is pretty good for stuff like this, generates a bike-specific option and you can drag the route around to avoid dodgy junctions etc.

If you manage to find a decent route, copy the address into this page ( http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input) and it'll convert it into a Garmin friendly GPX format.

Use the Chilterns cycleway for some of it (seems to cover a good chunk of where you want to go), it's signed both directions and will avoid nasty roads and traffic:

IMHO anything that gets you further away from Luton is generally both sane and very good idea.

St Albans based and ride around that neck of the wood quite a bit, Grew up around Tring so know that side of Aylesbury reasonably well as well.

This is the route I'd take personally Strava Link please note that getting out of Luton airport could require a bit of care as it's all big roads but once out into the lanes I've largely stuck to smaller quieter routes.

Avoiding the grim bits means it's 50K but pretty flat overall and if you're used to a 40K daily commute you should have no trouble.
