I have just built up a second hand Santa Cruz 5010 cc (eBay bargin) which has a tiny amount of play in the lower linkages.  Is this something that needs fixing fast or can I just get a grease gun and try fresh grease and re-tightening?  Is some movement expected with vpp?

Movement which way?

It should move freely in the intended direction, but if there’s any sideways movement I’d want that looked at PDQ like.

it’s probably only bearings, and they won’t be much.

Everything moves freely and as it should but if I hold it by the saddle I can feel some movement/play/looseness.

Are the bearings a specialist job or should any lbs be able to sort them?

Lifting the seat?

Lift it from the top tube to check it's not the post.

After that check the shock bushes

Bearings are best done with the nice tools but can be done by anyone who knows what they are doing

I don't own that bike but they shouldn't be difficult to obtain and yes, and half decent lbs should be able to fit them. It's a DIY job too, if so inclined.

You might find the rest of the bearings could be dry even if no movement is apparent.

"After that check the shock bushes"

What exactly are shock bushes?  I've never really understood.

Definitely not play in dropper/saddle?

Shock bushing first port of call, if the plays there it's cheapest & easiest fix (I know this after replacing bearings & only after realising it was bushing!)

The hardware in the ends of the shock you have a bush which sits inside and then the hardware goes along side it
