I'm in Africa atm and don't want to pay the huge roaming cost that Voda charges. I was under the impression that Strava will work in airplane mode, only it doesn't . Don't get any GPS bars on the app unless I turn off airplane mode.
Is this always the case? Thought GPS worked independent of phone networks.

You want to turn off Data Roaming, that will stop the bills. Could also turn off 3G to be sure, and maybe just disable celluar all together.
As above, GPS will be disabled in Airplane mode.
