Hi
Currently using an app called Outdoor GPS which suggest that it uses GPS signal rather than phone signal to track routes
However on some rides the phone loses signal which means that part of route is lost eg in the Kentmere area on Sunday.
So my question is do you have to enable GPS in an iPhone or am I losing GPS signal in these area?
If you do have to enable GPS how do you do it?
Cheers
Steve

If you lose phone signal, your GPS should still work.

Sometimes you might lose GPS signal, but that's not connected to your phone reception.

If you have an iPhone the GPS should already be on - it's how maps work - but you may need to enable 'location services' in some apps.

Hi
Thanks for that.
What you say is how I understand it but I’m surprised that I lose GPS signal in some of these locations as opposed to phone signal which I would fully understand.
Location services are enabled appropriately.
Cheers anyway

The two things are seperate as the phone has a gps chip.

By “part of the route is lost” do you mean the uploading of your track to the “internet” ? On apps like Endomondo even if phone signal is lost route/track gets uploaded later or you can run it in “off line mode”. It sounds to me like the app is not uploading the track correctly once the phone signal is lost. The gps position should be available all the time

No at the end of the ride when I stop the clock on the route either a section of the route doesn’t show as recorded or the “app” draws a straight line between two points on the route where the connection is lost.
Eg my route on Sunday recorded 15miles with sections of the red line marking the route as missing but a mate using strava had approx 22 miles for the same route

Could be poor GPS reception, happens in trees, in steep valleys or could be a fault with the phone. My better half had a duff module in her iphone which ended up with rubbish wifi and gps performance. Diagnosed and replaced by apple store.

If you're carrying the phone in a bag with lots of stuff this may also limit gps tracking.

Worth trying an alternative app to rule that out.

I've used that app occasionally with no problems ( well I use it all the time for map reading but only occasionally for recording). GPS watches general work better than phone apps tho. IMO.

Hi
Thanks for the input.
I do put it deep inside my bag to protect the phone.
This could be an issue.
It’s happened on 2 phones so probably not that.
Cheers
