Hi, I would like to download routes for dartmoor and the south west on my iPhone and use the GPS on the trails instead of a map to do it quicker than gaffing with a map.
Can this be done or do you need a Garmin or other GPS?
Would the iPhone lose GPS in middle of Dartmoor etc?
Thanks for any help or advice,
Ells
No you can do all this on the phone with nay number of apps. The phone has it's own GPS chip it doesn't need mobile signal to know where it is. The only tricky part is getting an app where the maps are downloaded onto the phone (as some apps need mobile signal to refresh the map). You can in fact cache the maps in the phone with apps like Google maps - you do this by going to the place/area you want and scrolling around etc, this loads the maps into the phone. I did this whilst in Morocco and the gps/mapping worked fine.
I'm sure someone will be along with app recommendations - I use mostly Endomondo for logging (and it has simple maps) but not the route following functionality but I also have Outside for simple OS maps, I prefer a paper map for route finding/following in the main though.
The phone battery will run down reasonably fast, a Garmin GPS will give you 24 hours plus, the phone 4-6
There are lots of threads on this and also Q&A about mounting the phone on the bars or in an armband etc
