My work rota has generously awarded me with a 4 day weekend next weekend, so we're hoping to sail across to the IOM (wind dependant).

Can anyone point us at any off road riding options from Peel?

Cheers STW

The old railway line (Heritage trail) goes from Quarter Bridge Douglas to Peel & is a great way to get to TT viewpoints between Quarter Bridge & Ballacraine. It's great for going for a spin away from the traffic. You don't need a MTB I do it on a Halfords CX bike. For proper off road stuff ask on the Manx MTB website, there's quite a few trails over there.I've done the Manx E2E  a few times & the terrain is similar to the Lancashire moors/ Rivi.

For a start - coastal footpath from around the back of Peel hill to Glen Maye, then pretty much across the road into Glen Rushen and take the track that leads off on your left (most seem to call it Pipeline...) up to the Round Table crossroads. Straight across and into the plantation ahead of you (Cringle) where there’s some good stuff. From the bottom of Cringle plantation go left into Corlea plantation which in turn leads into South Barrule plantation. There are various ways through there and then you can either find your way down to the old Peel - Douglas railway line and go back to Peel that way or carry on into Stoney Mountain and/or Archallagan plantation and then drop back down towards St. Johns.

Best is to pick up a 1:25,000 map to see where/how places join up. There are no trail centres and in my humble opinion the best riding is in the northern hills. Start from Ballaugh and head south and there’s loads of good stuff if you like anything from steep, techy stuff to open moorland crossing. Most of it’s all down to local knowledge though (like anywhere, I suppose) and best would be to have a guide.

This might be some use but they have to stick to strictly legal routes, I suppose.....

Probably the same as above that Andy's posted - there are a few local groups who do Saturday rides that cover the island's hills but they're closed groups for various reasons 🙁

“there are a few local groups who do Saturday rides that cover the island’s hills but they’re closed groups for various reasons 🙁”

And I’m not a member of any of them, mostly because I never seem to be able to get out on Saturdays 😉

I don’t really do the “big group” thing either.

Correction to my first post -

“take the track that leads off on your left (most seem to call it Pipeline…) up to the Round Table crossroads.”

What a dickhead I am - I meant on your right, obviously.....
