What are my options? It's a drop bar bike so I'd like to avoid Rohloff if possible, as I've never seen a decent shifter option for those. Does Shimano make one? That would be my first option as they are sooooo much cheaper. I've also seen another company called Kindernay, I've never heard of them, are they any good?

I found this review of the Kindernay system

Any reason you didn't want a Rohloff? Look at www.rohbox.com. It's an adaptor for Rohloff hubs that allows you to use modded Campy or SRAM drop bar shifters. Fitted a few sets now, fairly easy to set up.

I looked at Rohloff, they do a 142mm thru axle version but it only fits a few very specific frames, and I'm not sure if that includes mine!

How much modding do you need to do? Lol

I dont trust that 3x3 sealed for life hub. I would be asking them what is the expected life. Its hardly a bother to do the rohloff annual oil change

Kinderney looks good with its separate cage making it possible to easily swap the gearbox into different wheels.

Kindernay look great, but no drop bar shifter options unfortunately. And also, Rohloff money but without the Rohloff reputation for longevity

Strewth buying and fitting a Rohloff to a 142mm thru axle frame does not look easy. One for a bike shop I reckon:

Ben at kinetics in Glasgow has a lot of experience with rohloffs and other hubs. Might be a good shop to buy thru

Thanks for the tip! I'm London based tho, so I'd be looking for something more local..

Some useful info on the new crop of alternatives here. Looks like a lot of people are producing hub gears aimed at the e-bike market:

FWIW Van Nicholas do a drop handlebar that can take the original Rohloff shifter. It splits to allow fitting. Might open up an option for you?

I was looking at that! It's a really useful piece of kit but I'm too attached to my mega wide Cowchippers to go for those unfortunately!
