My rear disc (pretty new Deore XT) suffers from intermittent power issues. Most of the time it works fine but occasionally, usually at the worst possible moment, it loses all power and you can pull the lever back to the bar. I assume there's an air bubble wandering around in there. Anything I can do to settle it or remove it other than a full bleed?

Full bleed. I had a similar problem after badly bleeding mine. Since doing it properly they've been superb.

Full bleed. Old fluid came out jet black on mine. 10x better now, so much so I need to do the front now.
