Lad is in halls and our home insurance covers his stuff and bikes while he’s in Uni Halls accommodation. Each bike is named and valued.

But student house (Sheffield) from August.
Trying to find the best option to cover his very very expensive bikes, in a rented student house in one of the high bike theft cities in the uk.
How do you insure your student kid’s bikes?

Take out the same policy you have now, but at his new address? Might be more expensive, but it’s higher risk so…

Yeah, should have said our current policy won’t cover his stuff in a rented student house. They also decline to cover as a separate policy.

Get a much, much less expensive bike for living in the student accommodation

Edit: for clarity, not saying get a shitter. Just leave the exotica for home or for after graduation

Would say get a less expensive bike, but living in Sheff he'll be really close to the Peaks and some great riding, so see the appeal of bringing his good bikes.

Lad (showing my age) at work was a student at Hallam about 5 years ago. From memory he had a nice bike whilst a student. Will ping him a message on Monday and see who he used for insurance, if anyone.

Daughter was at Sheffield. Everyone in the house share had expensive bikes.
The house had a cellar and it was made like Fort Knox. All the time she was there they didn't have a problem. She had three bikes, Enduro, Jump and Gravel.

Some of their mates were followed back from a Peak ride and their bikes went within a couple of hours. Don't think they had been chained up in the house.

The riding scene from both Uni's is probably one of the best in the country.

Regarding insurance we were with M and S at the time and they agreed to cover her bikes whilst she was there

Another shout for M&S - they are great for student cover generally - not sure what their limit on bikes is though

Wasn't the recent thread on an insurance claim and being offered 2nd hand value by the insurance co an m&s policy?

Get the bike covered by a dedicated bike insurance co rather than home insurance. It'll cost more, but will be covered.

Nationwide and Aviva have free student cover, on same terms as the rest of thier home contents cover.

Hers and ours were covered new for old, home and away
On another note we had two S Works bikes stolen after our garage was broken in to a few years ago. M and S replaced them both like for like with the latest models.

Maybe check with bike specific insurers? I'm with Bikmo and they were very easy to deal with when I had a claim. And my insurance didn't go up when I renewed

That was possibly mine, snapped frame and they only offered to fix

Tbh their assessor managed to royally f up the claim in the end, although because of their ineptitude it actually worked out hugely in my favour

I’ll say no more…

I rented rooms out in my house for 5 years. I couldn't get insurance for my bikes at less than 10% of the value per year. I just had to accept if they got nicked, that was it.

Some of my lodgers had expensive computers and laptops insured through endsleigh.

Is it worth giving an insurance broker a ring and seeing what they can do?

I use quoteline direct now if it's something tricky to insure.
