Evening all

Trying to install my new singlespeed Middleburn cranks ( hollowtech type) and it seems as if the axle is too long.

The frame has a 68mm bottom bracket and have installed the bb with 1 spacer each side. When fully tightened there is still about 5mm of play. It would probs take another 3 or 4 spacers. That can't be right can it?

Anyone got this set up and can check for me?

MM

Have you got the adjusting ring? My set were missing it when they turned up.

Sounds like your missing the adjustment ring on the non-driveside crank - this is my RX8 set-up below

68mm BB shell, Hope ceramic BB, one spacer on non drive side, two spacers on drive side

Yes there is an adjusting ring. I probs not using this correctly.

Now have 2 spacers each side and there is still a mm or so of play.

If I put a 3rd spacer one side the cranks don't spin freely when tightened. Argh

Does the adjusting ring move in an out...gone to bed now!?

On re reading those instructions again, I know I'm not using the ring properly.

It will all come good in the morning.

Thanks for help

Sleep on it rather than bashing on in frustration, it'll become clear in the morning 😉

Note : It is vitally important you torque up the 8mm allen bolt on the drive side to the correct torque of 45-50 Nm otherwise the cranks may work loose and enlarge the spline seat in the drive side crank arm, check it after the first few rides as well to make sure. It does seem like an incredibily high torque to place the bolt under but persevere with it and don't wimp out - it needs to be f-kin tight. A bit of antiseize assembly compound on the crank splines, on the adjust ring threads and on the teeny 2.5mm allen headed bolt threads will not go amiss either.

Thanks All

Sorted in 60 seconds this morning!

I just hadn't realised the ring with the bolt in turned to take up the slack.

Reading the instructions late at night was my mistake!

Fit 1x 2.5mm BB Cup Spacer on NDS and 2x on the DS of the external BB.
Wind the adjuster into the NDS crankarm and fit the axle.
Torque it as specified.
Take up the 'slack' by rotating the adjuster towards the BB.
Tighten the 2.5mm Allens carefully.
Fit pedals and ride.

Paul..your instructions are far clearer than Middleburns!

I will dismantle it all tonight and sort the right amount of spacers/copper slip etc.

Once you have tightened the adjuster is it not advisable to back the adjuster off 1/2 a turn (ie undo) so you remove any side load on the bearings?
