Installing aftermarket chain rings

I've just bought some new chainrings to install on my gravel bike, the outer ring has come with a small screw in post and I can see the threaded hole on the chainring but before I put it all together, does that post go on the outside of the ring behind the crank arm to stop the chain getting wedged in or does it go on the inside as some sort of shift assist.

My hunch is the first but I'm not 100% on that so would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Gets my vote.  Stops the chain getting wedged and may also ensure the correct orientation of the ring (if it makes a difference for shift ramps and/or ovals)

On the outside to stop the chain falling into the pit of doom and getting wedged between the chain ring and the crank arm.

Also, unnecessary I know, it'll only screw in the one way.

Nah, most of them will screw in from both sides, i know. I've have people ask me why their bikes don't work after they screwed them in from the wrong side.
