I don't have the Park tool anymore.

Will a split crown just slide down and pride open with a screw driver?

Sorry trying a bit of cash instead of buying a punch tool.

little smear of grease and slide down with your hands (never needed to force it open).

I generally make sure the split is at the side not front or back.

Yup it just slides into position

Cue 10-page debate on which direction the slot should face

Big thank you guys!

Was about to either buy a punch tool for £30+ or pay a LBS for £5-10.

Side ways would be a good idea but probably at the front no wait agh!

I can sell you a specific tool for the job for £25 if you wish.

It may just look liek a bit of plastic plumbing pipe with "Park Tools" in magic marker on the side, but it definitely isn't OK.

it's easier if you put another slot in it

I've got a 1 1/4" sleeve of plastic waste outlet pipe, cut to order, 75p from local hardware shop, just bashed a baseplate without slot onto some forks using rubber mallet.

Granted yours has a slot but if you are doing this and it has't got a slot the pipe works just fine,

Very funny lol.

Ok the split ring slid down and pushed easily on the oversized tube.

I put the split to the side.

Rear ftw. Don't ask me to explain myself 😉

explain away - I am undecided.

My worry is mud getting flung up off the tyre into the split.

Usually the slot for crown race removal is there, so that bit is unsupported anyway. Probably makes no difference though.

yeah but slotted races come off easy anyway. Same as they go on easy with no tools 😀

No, all I mean is that the unsupported bit of the crown race (the split) might as well go over the slot in the fork crown, given that neither are helping the overall integrity of the set up. Probably marginal nonsense at best though...

Slot to the front, avoids shite spraying on to it.

I don't want anything spraying into my rear facing slot.

Waterproof baggies prevent that... 🙂
