I have bought new chainrings but on tightening the cranks the inner ring is locked tight against the plate on my stinger chainguide. The new 24t ring is clearly thicker than the old one therein lies the problem. Can anyone advise where I can get a completely flat 24t chainring?

I don't think so but I may be wrong as I said the old ring has no step on it and is totally flat. Bloody frustrating

Did you buy a cheaper steel one that the tabs interfere with BB shells unless you take the grinder to them and take a couple of mm off them?
