Hi all
My gears recently decided to start playing up. I tried re-indexing them by adjusting the cable tension but for some reason I could get it changing gears smoothly in the top 8 gears but clonking about and changing terribly in the lower 3 (11 speed). When I then got the low gears changing smoothly, the top 3 gears wouldn’t change and were clonking. It would get worse when I put the clutch on.
I was planning on upgrading a few things any way so I decided to just start again with my upgrades.
I got new inner and outer cables, chain, cassette and shifter (upgraded to XT). But still I have the same problem. The only thing left not changed is the rear derailleur (XT RD-M8000).
I’ve had no crashes or dropped the bike at all. Could there really be a problem with the derailleur itself that’s developed just through wear and tear?
I’m just finding that hard to believe as I have derailleurs on my retro Mtb’s 10 years older than this one and still going strong.
Mech hanger? Have you checked it's straight (with a tool, not with an eyeball)?
What he said^^^^^^
Before you replace anything it's always worth checking the mech hanger. Buy a tool a learn to use it.
Ah! No, that hadn’t crossed my mind. Can’t relate any bad knocks to it, but I guess it’s possible.
Never knew there was such a tool.
I’ll give it a go, cheers.
