You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Well that was insane!
It was the Lake Ride, which is run by Malverns for all the pros. You ride across a floaty narrow thing over a lake. There were pros like Preston Williams, Jono Jones, Ben Deakin, Katy Curd of course.
The commentator was "here's James Weeks the DMR 4X superstar" lol we were laughing as he's never ridden a 4X bike or track. But the daft lad was one of only 6 to make it out of 20.
So he made it to finals which was a train, one after another.
Sadly he binned it on that one but it was a brilliant brilliant effort. Awesome.
He's made massive strides this weekend as a person and his whole presence, mixing with loads of people
Aside from the great results, this might have just been the tonic he needed, just to enjoy riding and no pressure, after a couple of perhaps results that might have been a little hard to stomach for him, or reaching the bar he has set himself.
Riding bikes is great fun.
100% not going to argue with that fella. It's been an incredibly intense year/years and this year for sure.
So yeah this has been just a fun playful weekend. It's been great as he's forged friendships this weekend that will keep him happy for years and give him new riding mates
He's racing Enduro tomorrow and the coaching with the boss on Monday.
This was the return leg after making it over once

We spent the day at FoD with the coach yesterday, it was massively interesting to hear/see the input, thoughts, ideas put about by her. The boy has just seemed to have lost a little edge and within the 4 hours they spent out there his riding was picked apart in really really minor levels of detail and put back together. Nothing was massively wrong it was a question of a few inches of movement here, a few inches higher/lower/ of certain things in a few places, a dip of a shoulder, a movement of a head, etc etc..
Hopefully it all put him back in a better place again and will let him move forward with his riding and get back his edge again... Time will tell but there's plenty to work on for him.
THe weekend brings racing again, it's the Pearce Cycles series at Bringewood this weekend. There's not a lot between the top 3 in the overall and it's tight as heck going into this round. They'll all need to be on form and on their A game to keep in the running. It's a track all of the main contenders know pretty well, so all things should be pretty equal out there.
The weather isn't exactly looking super friendly though so may need a few tyre thoughts from us throughout the weekend.
It's Les Gets World Cup weekend and as you'll have guessed we never got the call to go...

Part of me isn't as gutted at that as i should be 😀
The bike will certainly be happy that you didn’t go! Can’t imagine what trying to deal with all that mud and kit washing as a van based privateer is like.

It's comical at times honstly, we've had days like that above and it's horrific and comical at the same time. We've had days where you're making a river behind your gazebo as you've got to drown the bike time and time again, then you're down in the stream or filling buckets at the waterfall/river to clean it... It's just sould destroying.
But we wouldn't have it any other way 😀
First, congratulations on the win, that is cool.
This is probably better on a different thread, but as most have no traction I will ask here. Are the Nationals always held at Malvern? I thought it was a fun event, seems a really odd place to have such a high accolade event. And the numbers are reflective? 5 in senior mens, 4 in womens, 2s and 3s in some categories? Is there even a national series anymore?
I really thought dual slalom was going to be in 1997 🤣 although seeing Scott Beaumont won the mens was not a surprise!
It's always there but it's a long way from it's heyday in terms of 'event'
Scott is trying to bring back both DS and 4X to the proper heights he thinks it should be at.
There's no national series, I'm not honestly sure if there's any other races in DS, but there's a 4X series. Funnily DMR have asked if we'll go race them which we may well do but currently it's a very few number of entrants which would mean we arguably won't unless it changes.
So he may never actually get to wear the jersey in anger 😂
Was out with the boy yesterday riding and i commented something i've thought about a bit lately as i often jump on his bike to test various little things, but he runs his seat really low, for a tall skinny lad he runs it about 3" lower than me.
"oh it gets in the way when riding down so i run it lower"
"ummmm so you need a longer dropper then?"
"yes please"
LOL why this never came up before i have no clue.. It's a 34.9 so i need to look into that for him.
We've got 2 sets of SRAM DB8s arriving as well, one for his Fuel and one for his spares for the Session. Although we may run them with Maven levers for the RSC adjustment. The Code RSC are getting old now and a bit flakey, i snapped off a bleeding edge port in one of the calipers on a set the other day which necessitated the first set, but then he tried mine and liked them, so i've got another set on the way. However this is next week, lets get this weekends racing out of the way first and then we'll sort everything else
LOL why this never came up before i have no clue
Quite possibly, kids don't really care that much. They have mountains of energy and is enjoying himself
There's a 200mm (or shorter) drop 34.9 post for £50 here - sportandleisure.com
Mine turned up yesterday, not had a chance to fit, but looks as decent as any others. Lever looks fine.
(oh yeah, it hasn't got the layback clamp like the on in the photo)

Seen a few of those on Ebay/Google, but never heard of them so assumed they'd be a pile of crap. I'd be very interested to know though as finding anything appropriate seems quite tough. There's a few One-Up but they're 240mm and i don't think he needs a 240 or even that it wouldn't be too tall even fully inserted, so maybe about 200 like that above.
Hopefully fitting tomorrow, but its for my ebike and gotta take the motor out (again!) so might be delayed. Not sure how a dropper can be crap, they're all much of a muchness from my experience! The OneUp currently on the bike is probably the quickest responding one I've used, by a millisecond or 2 🙂

Well if it doesn't move up/down well, if it sticks, if it wobbles LOTS, if it falls apart after 2 rides.... all make it crap. I don't expect droppers to last forever, but i'd rather pay more for a decent one...
However, paying LESS for a decent one would be even better of course.
Best dropper I have had so far has been PNW. Adjustable travel and seemigly reliable although mine don't get the hammer that young James would give it on a weekend 🙂
😪 so I could pull my motor out, piss about with cables for 4 hours and then have a nonfunctioning dropper. Thats quite upsetting
so assumed they'd be a pile of crap
... And you'd be right.
My son bought one. Out of the box, it wouldn't stay in the up position (not even fitted to the bike). Sent it back for a replacement, which was exactly the same. Avoid.
I've just had this as well, had about 2-3cm of sag and when when compressing it, sounded like gravel was in it. I stripped it, zero grease, and looked pretty flimsy so sending it back. Avoid.
Weeksy, I just saw an instagram post from James with a British Champion’s jersey. Congratulations to you both. You guys must be made up.
Bit of a tough and complicated day here really. This is likely to be a bit of a brain splurge of words and thoughts, so only continue if you like the random insanity.
Day started ok, bike was prepped before Malverns with new frame bearings etc, so it was good to go as it never got out of the van that weekend.
The boy came back a little disappointed after his first few runs at Bringewood as he's been working on corners with the coach.
The consensus he seems to be leaning towards is that this frame is too big for him. It's a 495 reach and his R2 is 465. His Fuel he was working on corners with Katy is 465 as well.
So we dropped his flip chip into Low which drops the reach to about 490 I think which made things very slightly better. When he was thinking back, his Fort William podium was on the R2 white bike, then since then he's not really been on his best form. Which coincides with moving to the bigger frame. He did win a fod race on the bigger frame, but that's a fod race not a national.
Sadly it seems he's been feeling this for a while, but never mentioned it, so the R2 frame isn't here with us, otherwise I'd have already had it built up and ready for riding. So he's going to have to ride this one and then Sunday night when back I'll build the white one again out of spares and the forks out of this one. It's only really forks we're missing or I could have built it as a bike before coming. I've been trying to get some forks but that's been challenging.
So we're not really expecting much from tomorrow but we're here so we'll put down a run or two and see where we end up.
Always slightly complicated
Bit of a practice crash yesterday meant we didn't make today's race. Nothing major but risk Vs reward made us decide not to race. Well, him decide, I left it to him and despite the fact it'll wipe out his overall Pearce hopes I completely agree it was better to pull the plug.
So instead I came home and built this.
Always a hard one to call but if any doubt at all its probably the right one.
Lol at least he had a bit of fun, he's the 3rd rider, 😃

Top couple of days and nights over at fod. I spent some time looking at houses and areas as well as 4 hour riding on Mon and 3 hours riding today. Got a lot of yes and no thoughts/locations for upcoming house move.
As part of the plan the boy is now a British Cycling certified coach. Its only the first step on the coaching ladder, but some of the other bits he can't do till he turns 18. But he can now do coaching sessions, it also cemented some of his plans for his future.
still lots and lots of little background plans and things going on as usual.
are they the db8's from banana industries?
Crazy value at £30 an end
are they the db8's from banana industries?
That's correct, i've been running them on my Fuel for a few months and IMO they're basically Codes, but mineral oil. No issues, no performance problems, just work like they should. The boy tried my bike and was impressed with them, so in the interest of compatibility of bleed kits and fluids, i've decided to swap everything to the mineral oil setups, so both our Fuels will be DB8 and the Session is Mavens. I've been running the stock pads on mine in Morzine and Andorra but i did swap to an EBC set on the last day in Morzine, which again, have been perfectly fine... I like em myself.
interesting - may give them a go as an alternative to my slx
interesting - may give them a go as an alternative to my slx
The only thing they're lacking is the bleeding edge port which it the tidiest bleed system known to man, i love that, but sadly it's not on these, but doign a bleed still isn't that messy. I am a fanboi of SRAM brakes though for quite a long time i admit. I'm even debating pairing the Maven lever end with the DB8 top end (i paid £75 for a full Maven Silver lever end) which gives me/him the full RSC/Swinglink but for £100 instead of £200+ for full Mavens.
Oh and brackets, they don't come with brackets.. Not an issue for me as i re-used the Code RSC brackets... but something to be aware of.
They also come ready for internal routing with a barb and little cover pre-fitted as well as a bung in the lever so you can just lob it all together, although you may need a 2nd barb if you want to shorten the cable, i managed to cut the hose off and use the one that came, but it's a bit of a faff and if i had more barbs i'd have just used that
My wife used DB8s for a full week in Morzine (220/200 Galfer Rotors) on her e-bike and they didn’t fade once. For a budget brake that everyone removes from their bikes before even trying them they have been utterly faultless. There are far too many snobs in our sport
I’ll probably pick up a few more cheap pairs for my hardtails and maybe even my Ebike as it has Codes and (As Weeksy says) it would be nice to only need one bleed kit.
Did James get any options to ride for the World Championship this weekend? Presume that’s based on BC ranking for selection, albeit happy to be corrected!

We applied and were (rightly) rejected for it. It was a very very small chance of him getting it this year and there's several others even if 3-4 dropped out who'd likely be in before him. So sadly we're not heading to World Champs this year no.
The team will be known to some who watch Juniors, but watch out for Rowan Cross who'll come as a bit of a surprise to some, but he lives just down the road from Champery and is insanely quick over there.
P3 there last year in the European Champs.
Well it's new frame day today... Strictly speaking it's not new frame day for AGES as it's got to be made then built etc, there's a huge lead time on it but it'll be with us for race season next year.
His Session is coming up to 3 years old by then and we thought we'd try something 'different' in terms of a standard pivot and probably a Rimpact Chain Damper along with the TMD. He's done a day at Dyfi on it as a test day and was flying on it, enough that i think he'd be pretty much straight up to his pace within a few days and a bit of setup work.
Slightly different to this as it'll be running a Vivid Ultimate air rather than the coil.

Lovely. Given the back and forth on the Session sizing how have you approached that?
Well as he spent the day on the size 7 we've gone with that as he loved it in a 7, we've been chatting with suspension/geometry guys and also gone for a possible option of a 50mm stem instead of the 45 we're usually running, which will settle the bike slight and techincally make the 'reach' slightly longer. The size 7 is a 470 standard reach, with his Session being a 465, so it's fractionally longer, if we then run the extra 5mm stem it should get him a bit bigger but without being too much bigger like the R3 Session has ended up being.
@weeksy FoD World Cup on Friday? If so, I will keep an eye out for you as I am donning a number plate for the 2nd time in 2 years in an attempt not to come last.

Sadly he doesn't finish school until 3.15 so we wouldn't get there until 5.15 so a bit late really by the time he gets kitted up and up the hill he'd only get 2 runs.
Good luck though to you 😀 you'll deffo not be last !
Yeah he's quite excited, i mean i don't think it'll change a huge amount in terms of results, from what i've seen with their level of racing, the bike doesn't massively affect things unless it's a real marmite thing, but it'll be cool to jump on something different as well as it being from a company UK based/built as well as a place we love playing... so it's deffo got a lot of appeal.
From my perspective it's a frame i love the design aspects and simplicity of to mechanic. It helps that it's a 157 rear and a mullet as we've got 3 of those rears, so we'll debate whether we change another wheel into a 4th 27.5 or whether we just sell both the 29ers off.
We've potentially got a few 29er tyres we don't need at the moment now. although we have also got some testing on the Schwalbe radials to get done at some stage as well.

Nice!
Daughter keeps asking about the S200 lol
Didn't realise they were super-boost rear on the 200's.
Tell her she can have a nice Session frame in Feb 🤣🤣
That's going to be lovely. Can't wait to see the full build.
That's going to be lovely. Can't wait to see the full build.
It'll be a lot more basic than your average Atherton. As it'll be from used parts from his current bike.
Cranks are a minor issue as we were potentially planning a Rimpact chain damper which isn't compatible with our Saint cranks, so that's a shame. The forks are either older Boxxer 35 of Fox 40 as the 38mm Boxxers are incompatible with this frame, so it'll be our used Boxxers on there. Mavens and DMR parts for the cockpit and a TMD will be on there. Reserve rims and Conti tyres.
Why is the new Boxxer not compatible, seems very bizarre?
Why is the new Boxxer not compatible, seems very bizarre?
I assume it's the offset of the clamps being less and therefore contacting the frame in some way.
Our Boxxer 35 are 56mm offset the 38 start at 44mm and are also 3mm wider diameter, maybe?
Can you just change the clamps?
Can you just change the clamps?
No clue mate, but it's not even a discussion as ours are 35s anyway and I don't think the 38s would make much difference in truth. If he did have massive issues I guess we'd go Fox 40s. But I think we'll be ok.
So is it mullet only or can it accept 29 rear?
People do seem to rave about them so be interesting to see it built. So long as he’s happy with it that’s the main thing. Is he going to keep the bigger session he has or are you getting rid of both?
Mullet only.
The bigger Session will go. I expect the white one will stay as an emergency spare. Maybe I'll build it for me to use. I've got everything apart from forks.
Just was looking on an Atherton thread on mtbr and found this video of his from his Demo day..
It's utterly bonkers seeing how fast !
Weird... can't seem to get it to post as a direct video.
That's some top notch AI content. The big giveaway is the lack of any moisture 😉
Dead jealous, I'd love to go there on a dry day.
Went over to see RSR Bikeworks the other day as i wanted him to check we'd set the suspension correctly, it appears i'd mis-interpreted his settings so for the last race the rear compression was slightly out, but don't think it made that much difference to him or his riding. However i do now know how to set it correctly which is ace.
Bike checked, lubed, prepped, pressures all done and ready for tomorrow.
Must admit, i prefer this one over the purple/blue one..
Race tomorrow?
Race tomorrow?
Nah mate, just a play day along with some back to back tests with an A200. Its Welsh Champs next weekend which we'll be debating in the van on way home tomorrow and the weekend after us National at Revs.
Well in truth we didn't learn much sadly. He got to ride laps on the Atherton demo bike and laps on his Session but mostly in the rain and a river or two running down the track.
So apart from the fact that the bikes fit him, that was about all that was worked out.
I got to have chats with Atherton guys about a few tech points which was good for me.
Well it seems we're back to the crazy.
An exchange of messages on WhatsApp this evening and he's entered in Llangollen this weekend for the Welsh Champs. Sadly he's not Welsh, well I'd argue he is, but based upon their criteria he's not. His grandparents are Welsh but it needs to be parents in this instance.
But we'll head up for the weekend and put some runs down and see where it puts him.
I was expecting to potentially not be out at all this weekend so it's kinda great, kinda bad lol. We've got an evening with the coach tomorrow to dial him and the bike in again, then early doors to Gollen on Sat.
Bring on the fun.
What’s the quality like on the Welsh Open? More ranking points?
any race is good though

any race is good though
Absolutely no clue... It's a Regional A which is mid/high, but you can't see the entrants in the list for this one sadly, so we'll just be rocking up and riding. We've been having a few issues lately so this is more a 'lets get dialled in for National next weekend' rather than anything else. We're just trying to get him back to his happy place on the bike at the moment as he's often coming down unhappy, not necessarily with 'riding' but with HIS riding and speed, he's enjoying riding the bike, but not finding that bit of GO that he knows he's got.
We'll find out by the end of this weekend hopefully if it's him or the bigger frame that's been causing it.
Well last night wasn't 100% definitive but honestly it was a huge step in what's hopefully the right direction for him. He was out with Katy and within the first 2 runs both he and her could see a massive difference in his riding. Whether that correlates to a difference in speed remains to be seen. But he was cornering with aggression, popping into and out of features and working his body and the bike way way more...
But that was only half of it, the major thing was seeing him coming down to the van in a manual for 100m into a 20m rolling stoppie with a massive smile and laughing in his helmet. That's something i've not seen for a while in truth and something that's really been troubling me.
He rode some tracks they'd used recently for FOD Thursday racing and could feel a big big difference in how he was hitting it and a few things he wouldn't pull for but did on this ride last night.
Sorting the bike and kit now for the weekend up at Llangollen, it's not a track he liked a few weeks ago, but i'm really hoping a large part of that is because of the bike issue. So we'll see tomorrow morning how he goes.
But that was only half of it, the major thing was seeing him coming down to the van in a manual for 100m into a 20m rolling stoppie with a massive smile and laughing in his helmet. That's something i've not seen for a while in truth and something that's really been troubling me.
The mental aspect of sport is much more important than the equipment used, or to some degree physical training.
All 'elite' level sport is a very difficult headspace to stay in because its not always going to go your way, and I think all high level sports people (especially kids on the way up) have dips. Resilience and sticking with it through the low points is key to being successful in the longer term. Easier for adults to appreciate but very hard for kids that just want to succeed.
You already know all this, but Ive seen it too with my sons sport to.

I was quite surprised to find ourselves at Gollen this weekend as i booked it when he was in what was the slump in form. So we'd planned on not going at all, but he shocked me by wanting to book it the day entries closed. It's not a track he's favoured and the weather isn't exactly looking friendly, so i was really pleased.
Going there now with him in a much better headspace, well, i'm looking forward to it a lot more than i was.
I've seen it over the years like you imply, where some days are down, up, down, up, down, down... I'd love to know how to unlock the 100% positive one all the time every time... but that's a tricky one to master.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't a coincidence though last night and he just happened to find form/fun..

Not humanly possible dude, you cannot be 100% all the time and can't expect anyone to be. So many external factors and inner critic going on - especially for a kid
Well we're at Llangollen.
Yesterday it rained from 7am till way after midnight. But he seemed happy with bike and track. He was running Krypto x 2 but his rear was pretty dead before we started as that was just practice.
After food I was going to swap to a better Krypto for today but weirdly we're short on 29 as I've mostly been buying 27.5s lately.
Bacon and coffee sorted me out this morning and I ended up finding a brand new Argotal which I've lobbed on.
Track weirdly seems a lot less muddy than yesterday and he's loving it.
It's a proper field of riders though so going to be a tough one either way. 2 WC racers in his cat today.
Practice until 11.30 then game time
Track drying by the minute so we've gone Kryptotal for run 2.
He's sitting P7 after run 1 with Billy Pugh 7s ahead of him in P1. Not unhappy with that, but not a massive gap to P3 so got to give it the full crazy on run 2.
Well it turned out that we have no clue where he finished, but roughly 7/8/9 which is about right for where he is at the moment and a brilliant bit of testing for him and the bike. But the organisers timing system once again failed, which we said we'd never enter an event with them again a couple of years ago, but this one was more about the testing/riding than the results.
We had people come down on run 1 and crashed, got up, got back on their bikes and came down, then on race 2 had a clean run but their time was only 1s different. We had people who were all showing on the same second and lets just say the start procedure was a bit of a joke and leave it there. I love to try and support the smaller organisers, but this lot don't make it easy and it was shown by only 120 people entered, whereas if it was the same event being run by someone else they'd have 250+.
Knowing all this was possible meant that we didn't go there with any expectations or results in mind, but it was all about finding the fun again, he was hitting the big triple that not many hit, but it wasn't any faster, he just wanted to hit it because he could and it was there.. Which shows the mindset he was in all weekend and really pleased me. The final bits of form and speed, we'll work on them now, but we're happy that riding is more enjoyable again.
So a couple of days to clean and sort kit and we're off to Wales again to Revs for the final round of Nationals for this year. The season is in a bit of a wind-down really and the dark evenings and cold evenings setting in kind of escalate that feeling. So much so that for Revs i've booked a hotel for the Sat evening. It's just too damn chilly and bleak at the track of the evening. So hotel, beers, food, chilling... Excellent.
Great work!
Is the enjoyment & improvement down to going back to the smaller frame?
I find it odd that for a "National" Champs ('cos Wales is a nation after all...) the organisers either don't have a back-up timing system, or if they know their system is gash they do something about it.
I know Stile Cop and 417 races are different league, but only issues we've had at either of those is a broken cable, which get fixed pretty quickly.
Are they one of the organisers for the overall UK National series too?
The happiness 100% down to the smaller frame yes. It was honestly completely instant, from run 1 on Thurs night he was right back at home. He's done 3-4 months on the bigger one and despite going pretty quickly he just wasn't feeling 'right' in some ways. Mostly his cornering..but we didn't quite pinpoint it and think about frame size until last week or so.
Gravity WERE one of the bigger players on UK/Welshish stuff, but due to many issues they kinda lost their way and lost a lot of the events. The issues were always timing and organisation/communication. They promised new timing systems as used by world class events... just not with world class organisers 😉
I could go into all the little 'niggles' with their timing stuff, but like i say, it doesn't really matter much as the result wasn't important as far as the weekend went.
We've never had ANY issues at 417 and only had a small one once at Stile Cop, we can easily forgive something happening once... but when you're at NAtional/Jersey levels, well it has to be better really doesn't it... It just has to be.
As always the video doesn't do justice to the real life technique these guys use for the triple.

Last Nation of 2025 this weekend at Revs. Sadly we've still never managed to get there and as he can't finish school until 3.15 we won't get to track walk on the Fri night as we'd usually like. But i'm sure he'll be golden, he's ridden enough 😀
So the bike was stripped down and all bearings checked and replaced as needed.
Idler top and bottom ideally needed a new bearing, so they're now done, they were not terrible, but then again they were not perfect. One of the jockey wheels was a bit rubbish so again, that was replaced. The rest was pretty reasonable apart from the rear tyre that was on for the test/play wheel, so i've got a new pair of 29 Kryptotal rears in DH SS arriving tomorrow and one of them will likely go on for race run. (Maybe last practice run before race).
Just need a plan for testing/riding this week and we're ready to roll.
What’s that, is it a mechanical heart before the valves are fitted?
I'd guess at the 3d printed(/additive manufactured) bits of an Atherton.
