Looks like the guys on the boarders are getting a bit more strict on what they used to just wave through.

We got stopped at the tunnel on the way back in July. First for the drugs smear which we have had before and secondly for a big inspection of which the looked in everywhere inside and outside the camper. Every drawer and cupboard was gone through. They checked the garage from both sides and from inside by lifting the bed. One wanted the garage fully empty but his mate stopped him whilst we were unlocking the bikes.

It looked like they were pulling most UK reg vans with the queues that were building up.

Enjoy the hills

Up and out before the dust clouds, best of luck to the boy for the seeding run later.

We were about yesterday, walked up to the wonky scaffolding, didn't count the stairs, don't think I want to. I was going to drop in to say hi near the end of the day, but I think you'd already left if I was looking in the right place.

We're coming spectating tomorrow, so I'll  stalk you then. Your easy up is the blue one marked Coventry Trek, right?

Yes sir that's us.

Been an interesting morning here, his practice finished 30 mins ago and he's not down.

Eventually he messages Katie and says "helicopter isn't for me, we're at top"

Not messaged his parent lol just his mate. Another red half way down so waiting again. This time he did message me though.

Send the lad my best wishes.  I’ve scrabbled and minced down the WC course in Morzine and held on for dear life on the 10%r line, so have an idea how brutal, steep and looooong these courses on proper hills can be.
Going at a race speed isnt even in my contemplation.
Should be a great experience for Jnr, fingers crossed he keeps it rubber side down. ? Edit, <should be a fingers crossed emoji.

Practice complete and now waiting for seeding run.

He's still not done a top to bottom without stopping. Partly due to learning the track and red flags.

He's due out 12.43uk roughly.

Thanks all. Really appreciate it

Time to get the legs spinning on the turbo soon, full pro mode engaged.

@thegeneralist yes, most tracks here are closed. My mate wasn't allowed to ride the red yesterday and had to road it down on his way to watch.

What a day.

There were 10+ people carted off in the helicopter today and qualifying for elites was cancelled as they ran out of time.

The boy felt his run was ok but some mistakes and some lines to pick up in the morning tomorrow. But sometimes I think he forgets the scale of things, this is the Euro Champs, the best in Europe on the hardest track around and he's 49th, out of the best in Europe lol.

From where we came at the start of this thread, that's, well, bloody amazing if you ask me.

Me, I'm fried. We made a mistake not booking accommodation in Champery, the drive on the roads is an absolute killer and eats your brain, especially at 5.10am when we're having to leave. Ouch.

The intensity of waiting, watching, waiting, it gets really hard

But it's exceptionally rewarding.

Go on lad!!!!! Who cares he is living the dream and making memories and a outlook on future life which will turn him into a good human if he comes last wins or anything in between! You are bringing up a good human and thats what’s important though a good euro track or a suicide here or there counts!

But give it hell junior weeks!!! Smash it!

@ocrider

Schedule change for tomorrow, elites out at 9-10 and then I think they're out racing first after juniors but it's all on the live timing link.

I think the lad is off about 3.30

@stevet1 I'm way more chuffed than he is, he still sees it as 48 people being faster than him and that being a disappointment. But that's the nature of the racer instinct of course.

He's been so excited all weekend and loving it. But it's many other things that make me more proud,, like how he's supporting Katie his team mate, the respect he shows to people quizzing him, his attitude to riding the track, his attitude when things are not perfect.

The riding side is just a bonus.

As always, we've got a long long way to go in this journey, we're only getting started here. But heck, it's an adventure for sure.

We've had an interesting week up to now.

The boy has been riding with a bunch of mates (well they are now) including 2 junior WC racers. It's been an absolute blast it seems.

We had another shock bushings issue which is really irritating me now, so I've been chatting with Ruth at TFTUNED on thoughts, we've got a few things to try when back. But chatting to others in paddock, this isn't uncommon on Sessions

So what we've done for now is fit what was at the time a brand new shock, it was taken off a new 24, it has a completely different mount with a big housing and bearing top end. It's been golden for 3 days now

We've had some loose spokes but nothing major and a few sets of brake pads. New ones in tonight for tomorrows last riding day.

I've been nursing a sore hand which I actually thought I'd broken when trying to walk home from Rhodos bar on Monday night. A little bit intoxicated I admit. But it's been sorta ok for riding and with painkillers I've managed well enough.

We've had meals Sat next to Pros, we've had broken bones and plaster for mates, broken bikes, but it's been pretty much epic here.

Well we finally made it home from what was the best holiday ever. Holiday in a very loose term of course.

The first few days was stressful beyond words, especially after walking the track which really didn't help. But the actual race weekend went smoothly in truth. There was only the shock bushings that was an issue. (And not brining enough footwear for myself)

The riding was a bit meh for me at times, the tracks are just not that brilliant at my level of skill, but honestly we have some excellent riding, I'm not good enough to hit the blacks (mostly, I did a few though) and the rest are pretty battered. But things like Serpentine were just ace fun. Ace was the bottom of Pleny Black.

So it's time to completely pull the Session apart as I've still got a few days off work yet as the boy has coaching with Katy this week. All bearings will need checking, brakes sorting and deffo some spoke tension sorting.

The lad formed some excellent friendships and even a bit of love interest lol. It deffo seems to have ticked all the boxes we'd hoped.

We're all a bit fried now, so really looking forward to getting the tools out and playing with all the bikes and fettling them.

Chewing through shock bushings?

Loading them up on one side?

Or just going slack ?

Run one of these on my kenevo Sl (geometron is sphericals both ends) to protect the shock from side loading.

Just going slack and a tiny bit of wiggle/play.

Apparently it's a 'thing' on these.

The 24 uses a bearing mount top which we've now got fitted, but his 23 shock is more adjustable and setup so we'd ideally like to run that.

We have a couple of options with TFTUNED on this, chatting to Ruth they can check the eyelet size and make a 30mm spacer of a fractionally bigger diameter to compensate for it.

Or there's

https://www.tftuned.com/fox-shock-mounting-hardware-bearing-roller-full-complement-8x30mm/p3730

Which could replace top mount with bearing mount, again this would help/solve (hopefully)

Short term, he'll run the 24 shock which after 4 days hammering was still sweet.

We've had times where the bushing lasts a month or two, but Sunday of race day it lasted 24 hours lol. Chatting to others in various paddocks it's a fairly common thing, which I think is why they fitted the bearing shock in the 24 models.

The boy is still sleeping so I've been sorting the Status 160 this morning and waiting for him to get up and fed and we'll start on his Session. It was checked every day sk I don't think there'll be anything to fix, but I'd like to go through all the bearings and see how his pads are etc.

The rotation on that top shock eye is pretty big and the forces its dealing with are high. Is the hardware wearing as well, or just the bushing?

That's the $64,000 question. To me one of the spacers I removed looks pretty polished, so I'm guessing that's a bit worn.

I replaced that with a new spacer and bushing, but like I say it developed play in 24 hours. So maybe a fractionally bigger spacer would be the answer.

I'm not massively concerned as it's a quick fix, but obviously I'd prefer months rather than hours between swaps

Stripping and sorting the Session today, it all started well, but then 2 upper pivot bearings were running very slow, so they were replaced.

Next he complained he'd dropped the chain, I checked the idler wheel, oh jeezy that's very dead, the teeth are barely present lol. The joy of having an idler you can't see well.

The Argotal he had on the back is completely dead, the knobbles are all falling off, so that's been replaced.

Forks, triples, headset etc all checked, cleaned, greased as well as all pivots and bearings.

He's hammered this thing for sure.

So it's ready to roll again and some bits ordered up.

Shock is booked in with TFTUNED next Tues so need to get that shipped out.

Sure did. I think he's starting to grasp that things need doing often when they're riding as they do, hence having a few minor niggles in Morzine so he now knows he needs to learn stuff

I'm running one of those Fox bearing mounts (not on a Session), they work well and are much better than bushings IMO and easier to fit

Had a brass shaft and polymer bushing in my KSL, and that had done 300hrs, granted the rotation is lower.

Careful with that fox bearing mount, its a pain in the ass to pull the bearings and also remove it altogether (you need a special tool)

I'll be waiting on TFT to get their views on the way forward. Worst case, we keep this as a spare and use the 24. But I dunno yet, we'll see what comes

I think I had that Fox retro fit bearing mount on a previous shock. The coil spring wouldn’t fit over the mount maybe - so you had to remove it to change spring rate. But I didn’t have any special tools - other than a cheapie bushing fitting tool from offset bushings and some other bits and bobs. Worked out a way to get the bearings and cups out.

My coil fitted over the mount but it's a Rockshox shock and I think their coil springs are a few mm wider than others.

This gives a good idea of what they were up to after racing.

Sacha is a junior WC racer and they're now good mates, along with her brother. The other 2 are lads we've known from the paddock for a few years now

It's been kind of an irritating time at the moment. The hand from Morzine still isn't 100% so i've basically been a van driver for the lad in the last week rather than a rider. He was at Rogate with mates on Sunday and then yesterday was Ponty with another mate. So he's getting plenty of time in on the bike, he's out on Weds with Katy and then we're off racing again this weekend.

Which brings us nicely back onto the Trek Session.

If you recall we've been blowing through shock bushings in a fairly alarming rate at times. So the shock was sent off to the lovely people at TFTuned who're supporting him and the team this year thanks to Ruth and Katy.

Just been chatting with the Tech Guy Mike about his shock and sadly it's seen better days, the shock body is damaged and marked up a bit more than they'd usually be happy with. Sadly the part is due "next year" lol. So they don't have a spare lying about either. It'll get put back together and after a fair bit of discussion on options the shock will end up at the spare.

His current shock is off a 2024 Session from a mate which we bought as a spare.

https://northwestbicycle.com/products/rockshox-super-deluxe-r-eyelet-assembly-bearing-eyelet-11-4118-073-002-h942777-01

This shows the top mount, rather than the standard bushing/spacer. It's thought of as being far more durable (especially with LLUMax bearings installed).

The standard shock is showing wear on the eyelet, so the recommendation from TFTuned is to keep the 23 shock as the spare and run the later 24 model as the everyday shock. Apart from the fact that we've used a little bit of 'mmmmm' and 'hows' that?' to get it setup, there's no real downside to this shock, but it does mean we may now have a bit of a play with this.  Of course TFTuned could dial that one in for us, but that means getting it out of the bike and off to them, which as we've got some racing coming up for a few weekends means we'll just have to wing it for now.

The boy had his first go on Dirt Jumps.

He got a DMR Sect last year but in truth it's not been used more than 4 times at the local pump track. Katy had an idea to work on some jumping so he went and hit the DJ stuff with her.

So this weekend was Pearce at Bucknell, Shropshire.

As you may (or may not) know by now, Pearce is a well regarded series and a step to Nationals for many racers, often you get people like Ethan and Jordan rocking up to race as they did it when younger and like to show support still.

The boys best result came a few month ago at Bringewood with a P11 beating his target of Top15 at Pearce for the year. We've always enjoyed the Pearce due to their organisation etc and relaxed attitude in the paddocks. We know a lot of the racers there, some slow, some fast, National Champs etc...

Saturday was a 5.30am start and we're getting up early and on our way, coffee and pain au chocolate and we're good to drive. Sadly with the A417 closed for weekend we had a longer and more twisty route.

He gets to practice from 9.30am till 4.15 (followed by a track walk ) so can get plenty of runs in. A couple of changes to the track irritated him a little but he was happy enough apart from that. He was riding most of the day with his new race/Morzine buddies and really enjoying it.

We sat and watched the World Champs, had a chill and then back out again...

The day ended with a happy boy 🙂

As he went for track walk i got the fajjitas on and cooking.

https://flic.kr/p/2qdC52g

When the world is like this, racing is a bloody wonderful place to be. Eventually after some (too many?) beers it was bed... I was in the van and didn't sleep particularly well.

Sunday started overcast and low hanging clouds, but dry. After coffee, sausage baps and waking up slowly, the Session was prepped and he went out for practice, you get 2 hours or so on the Sunday. Weirdly after 3-4 runs he came in saying he wasn't massively feeling the track compared to yesterday. But that doesn't change anything, he's still got to get on and race it 🙂

He came down 3rd last off due to championship position of 3rd (currently anyway) and looked pretty smooth and fast in the run in... Going into P3. Sadly he dropped 2 places as the 2 ahead of him in the championship are obviously damn fast lol. So ended the day in P5 after run 1. Awesome and epic.

https://flic.kr/p/2qdA7x4

(there'll be better pics/vids i promise)

He was happy, i was happy and his riding mate was ecstatic as he was P3 !!! HIs first time potentially on the podium

As we're waiting for race 2 the drops started from the sky, then more, then more. As it got more we decided to fit a more rain based tyre, which i don't think massively made any difference but the feeling was that in the grassy field it may offer more grip.

Essentially speaking no-one (of note) went quicker on run 2 than on run 1 so he finished the day in P5. He was 4s slower on run 2, which considering the wet, we'll take that 🙂

A very happy day for us all

The boy with his riding mate and rival. Just thought it was a cool pic as they've been riding a lot lately

Onto the weekend and it's a bit of a play race for the boy. MIJ at the Forest of Dean, which is this week on Sheepskull, it's a track he knows pretty well and has raced (and won) on before. We've got some testing to do on the rear shock as we're throwing on the earlier standard shock for the weekend so i can see a bit of a comparison between both setups. We've also got some tyre testing to do but that's slightly dependant upon the weather in terms of Argotal/Kryptotal testing.

I think we also need to start upping his pressures on the tyres a little. At the weekend he was running 18F 20R and when doing the Ski Jump you can see the tyres are basically flat on compression, so thinking maybe we need to throw a couple more in there in line with 21F 23R that we normally run at places like Dyfi and Fort William.

Now is a good time to be testing these sorts of things out, so we'll be giving it a little bit of a testing over Sat and Sun.

Another long weekend of riding racing and stuff, started with a wedding on Fri and then straight to FoD for practice/riding. I was out with mates playing as the boy was doing some riding and testing of the race track. Admittedly he knows it well so should have gone well enough anyway. But they had taped a few lines slightly differently, but not necessarily lines he'd take as they were taped a bit easier than the faster lines.

We decided to come home on Sat night instead of staying over, which looking back was the correct move as it walloped down with rain lots so would have been a crappy nights sleep.
Rocking up on Sunday we parked next to some mates, but these days half the paddock are mates anyway. The boy was offered some uplifts from a mate who's bike i fixed a couple of races ago as a thank you for that 🙂 So of course he took him up on it.
The track top section suited an enduro bike as a bit pedally, but the bottom was maybe more DH bike... but as always, he was on the Trek Session, no debate no discussion there. I'd fitted the older shock with the bushing/spacer to test that for the weekend and it seemed to hold up OK, but in truth he wasn't bothered either way which shock he was running.

Waiting at the finish on run1, his mate Trowb was coming down a couple of riders before him and stuck it into P1 by a massive gap, as the boy came down i saw a rider directly in front of him and realised he'd caught the rider on his run (just after half way down) which held him up.. He stuck it in P3, but was 6s off Trowb due to the hold up... Eeeeek !
Sometimes in racing you can get a re-run if held up by a rider but chatting to Len the commisaire the answer was "no mate sorry", ah well.

What impressed me was that the boy took it really well and wasn't angry or disappointed, just shrugged and moved on 🙂

Run2 is then seeeded, so despite him being held up he was 3rd last down and we knew the kid in 4th place and whilst he's quicker than him, it's not 30s 😀 so should have been OK.

Run 2 seemed to go pretty OK according to him but slightly lacking in comittment in some way (don't really know why). Sadly for Trowb he was pushed into P2 by an enduro fast racer and weeksy08 finished in P3. Not exactly what he/we had hoped i guess but a podium, a weekend of getting some fun, some laughs and riding, no injuries and the bike that still worked. So far from a disaster.

So the weekend brings us back to what appears to be a somewhat chilly National DH race at Rhyd-Y-Felin.

It's the final race of the Nationals for 2024 and a track the lad knows well. There's multiple layouts possible up there, but either way, he's ridden both a fair few times now. The weather looks like it's changed as it was showing wet all day Sunday and now has moved onto being dry until 5pm Sunday... but it does look a bit on the chilly side, certainly at night.

There will be of course all of the fast lads there, but we're used to that now and he'll just get on it and ride as fast as he can 🙂

Looking forward to it now as always... it's been a LONNNNNNNG season but in truth i'm struggling to think of anything apart from Rheola that we'd have done differently this year, it's surpassed all expectations and goals.

Ooooooft what a long weekend again !

Rhyd-Y-Felin (known as Bala) round of the National DH series.

We rocked up Friday afternoon after a bit of a detour via a Supermarket as i'd forgotten to bring the big bag of food i'd bought the day before LOL. However i had beer, so all wasn't terrible 🙂

He did a track walk and i got on with the fajitas 🙂 We then spent the evening talking crap, laughing and playing with fire 😀 The paddock atmosphere was brilliant (as it was all weekend). He spent his evening with Trowb his recent riding and racing mate and a load of others, messing about on mini-bikes and being daft, happily no-one was seriously hurt 😀

Saturday was dry but the morning was chilly, not as chilly as sleeping in the back of the Transit overnight though.. Brrrrr. Luckily i had the right layering on and i was OK. The track was slick in places and the boy had decided to run Argotal Argotal rather than going for something Kryptotal related. He went out for 3-4 practices and was happy with his riding, his pace and overall pretty up-beat. I'd lent our brand new Hydrotal to a riding mate but with the proviso that if it rains i wanted it back.
However we didn't quite get to that easily as on his next run the boy came down out of the field with something in his hand... How shocked was i to find it was his X01 crank !!! The non-drive side had completely killed itself and exploded (pics tomorrow), it was in bits, but even though he'd stacked it on the massive drop as they exploded he got lucky and wasn't hurt at all.

Panic stations for me as we don't have a spare set of cranks. I ran round the various pro-pits trying to beg, borrow, steal or buy some cranks. No-one had any at all. Well, until the last chance which was Madison Saracen and he had a set of 83mm Shimano Saint cranks with chain-ring and a new BB. After a brief discussion on price i was over at our van ripping his X01 off and the BB, then handing it to the Madison mechanic who fitted the Shimano Saint set for me. (i could have but he seemed excited to do them so i let him). We also found the ChainGuide (MRP) was damaged, but it was decent enough to last the weekend, so with the cranks fitted the boy was ready to go out.

Until that is, he span his front wheel, which the 220mm SRAM HS2 rotor had pringled in the crash and was useless. I wasn't going to fanny about straightening it there and then so whipped the other one off the spare wheel and within a few minutes it was all done and he was back out. He got one more run before his seeding/Qualifying run. The bike worked perfectly so he was good to go.
Seeding he had a decent and clean run and stuck it in 14th, considering his best National result is 13th, that was obviously pretty decent i felt. However, him, not so much "placing is OK but the gap to the front is terrible", i could kinda see his point but i was still happy with 14th.

It was then another track walk in the evening for him and the beers, banter and chat was in full flow.I had to take a break in the banter as someone needed a headset changing on their Session, i have(had) several sets in the van and it's an easy fix. Matey who borrowed our Hydrotal came over and he'd smashed his Chain Guide to bits, so after another chat with the Madison bloke, I spent the next 45 mins fitting that along with a new chain for him as he'd lost it just off the start gate. We know quite a lot of people in the paddock know who we can call friends, so even though a lot of the talk is bike related, it's a lot of fun. Eventually (i say eventually, it was only 10.20pm) everyone went to bed and it was back in the Transit for me.

Sunday brought dry conditions in the sky but still a moist track so the Argotals stayed on for the start. His runs seemed OK and whilst the bike was coming back fairly messy, well, we've seen worse. Then about 12 the rain started, only that light misty stuff but it was soon destroying the track making the field in particular exceptionally treacherous. Lots of riders lobbing it in the floor on the wet field. So we sat it out for 45 mins and waited as we wanted to leave it as close to race run time as possible to try and see how the conditions were.
As it rained more he asked for the Hydrotal so it was chucked on as well as fitting ANOTHER headset onto another Session for a mate (who ended up beating in race, whoops)
He got a last run in on the Hydrotal and declared it was better and staying on for the race. A bit of food and sent him up the hill.

It's hard to put into words the tension when you're waiting for them to come down the hill, you keep looking at the riders despite knowing yours isn't next somehow just in case it is.
Rhyd-Y-Felin doesn't have Voda signal so you can't watch the live timing to see the splits etc..
Eventually i see his jersey and he's looking smooth and fast and drops into P2 with 13 riders left.

Final position was 9th place, which is again his best Nation finish and a bloody incredible way to finish off 2024 National Series, there's still races (more on that later) but that's it for the BNDS. We were all absolutely chuffed with 9th

As always, there's a hell of a long way to go in this game but when you consider that last year he was regularly putting it in the mid 30s in Nationals, the improvement is there for all to see.

There's been an incredible amount of things going on in the background lately which really could have affected his mindset all weekend but he put everything aside and stuck in a top top performance.

We're now back home and sorting the bike and getting the list for tomorrow

2 x full set headset bearings to order
1 x Trek/MRP chainguide to order
2 x front wheel bearings on Bontrager to swap
1 x HS2 220mm rotor to order
1 x gazebo leg to order and replace

So it looks like we've got a little more crazy on the cards.

Next weekend is Hopton / Pearce uplift day
weekend after is Hopton Pearce race, final round of the series
It then seems that the weekend after is Bellwald in Switzerland for the IXS DH series. A mate of his invited him over for the trip, they'll be in an appartment for a few days close to track and giving it a go. I REALLY wasn't expecting this one but it'll sure be a welcome weekend away for him and his mate. It'll be proper weird not to be there, but to head over too would be costing me £500-700 and there's just not budget for that at the moment this year.

Nice write-up Weeksy. 9tth place is damn good. Those cranks look a little bit ****ed though 😀

How will weeksy08 cope in Switzerland without Dad's emergency fixes and replacements?! Will be good to find out!

@desperatebicycle

There's a question mate, i don't really know. The mates dad is clued up enough for emergencies but he's not quite the same level of experience as me. But i'll send the boy with basically everything brand new, from grips to pedals, bearings, headset, pads etc... So in theory... well... maybe 🙂

Thank you... 9th massively beat his season goal for Top20 in Nationals, so i think we can safely put that to bed now as completed as he's done that in the last 3 Nationals. The gap to 5th wasn't massive, so lots of scope there to pick up the vital seconds over winter and then next season is into Juniors which is good and bad as he's taking on some proper fast lads and WC racers again then... eeeek.

The cranks, i'd seen a few reports of them breaking, even recently Alfie Hemming snapped a set as well as a few others on Insta, but it's one of those thing you think "nah, it's fine they came on the bike they must be OK"... However yeah they were not. We're happy with Saints though as they're honestly just something that holds the pedals on.. the extra weight or rigidity isn't a factor.

1 x HS2 220mm rotor to order. Ordered.

1 x gazebo leg to order and replace. Ordered

Bike fully stripped and cleaned, new front wheel refitted. Rear wheel is squeaking on rotation so needs a strip, clean and check what item is causing that but shouldn't be too hard.

Cleaned and sorted chain guide which needed some adjustment due to being a smidgen too close between tensioner and chainring.

Jobs then.

Rear wheel squeak

New bars

New grips

Check front pads

Fit new HS2 220 on front

That should be it for both Hopton weekends, it'll then get a full strip before Bellwald IXS
